When I was first appointed Vice-Principal in 1986, I was informed I would be going to Ferndale School to work with Don Pickston. I couldn't have asked for a better start to my administrative career! Don was an excellent mentor and role-model, and he was very patient working with me, the rookie. We had two wonderful, rich years as a team at Ferndale before Don retired and I moved to another school. He was an amazing advisor to me and many others over the years; as I said at his retirement, a gentleman and a truly GENTLE MAN.

I was reading the St. Thomas Times Journal last night and was both surprised and saddened to learn of Don†™s passing on December 2nd. It has been over 30 years since I landed my first teaching assignment with Don at Queen Mary Senior Elementary School in St. Catharines and almost as many years since we last saw and spoke to each other. I have always considered myself to have been extremely fortunate to have started my teaching career under Don†™s tutelage and mentorship, and have tried to emulate his approach to the teaching profession as best I can. He always had my full regard and respect for the way he related to both students and teachers. The two years that I spent with Don at Queen Mary gave me the tools to have a long and satisfying career in education in a variety of locations in two provinces. For that, I am extremely grateful. Coincidentally, I finished this career in St. Thomas (my wife†™s birthplace also) where Don started life. I know that he will be missed by many colleagues, former students, and especially family members. May he rest in Peace.

It was sad to read about the passing of Mr. Pickston. He was my science teacher and science club advisor while at Queen Mary Schol grades 7 and 8, a long time ago. My thoughts and Prayers are with Allan who I had the great pleasure of working with at General Motors. I kept intouch with his Dad via Al. He was a great motivator for students, and teachers as well. We are thinking of all the family at this time .

Ruth and I express our sincere condolences to the Pickston family. Don and I taught together at Queen Mary School and Don was Ruth's principal at Ferndale for quite some years. Don and I (Mal) shared many interests, especially photography. It was great that we were together in education in those better days! Rest in peace, Don.

Don hired me as a teacher at Ferndale School in the early 80's. He was one of the kindest gentlemen I'd met and was truly a wonderful man to work for. My condolences to his whole family...he will surely be missed.
