Obituary of Joe Scarpone

SCARPONE, Giuseppe "Joe" After a long battle with Parkinson's disease, Joe passed away peacefully at home on January 17, 2013, with Julia, his wife of 50 years, by his side. Born in Casoli di Atri, Italy, on May 5, 1932. Loving father of Rosemarie (Dominic) Di Franco and Mario. Cherished nonno of Joseph, Alexander, Rachael and Damian. Dear brother of the late Guido (Yvonne) Di Sante of Belgium, Marina (Guerino) Dell'Orletta of Toronto and the late Danny (late Eva) Di Sante. Brother-in-law of Bruno (Ann) Mambella, Mario (MariaPia) Mambella of Italy and Tony Mambella (Marisa). Joe will also be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews and good friends. Joe immigrated to Canada in 1959, trained as a butcher, and co-founded Italian Food Market on Facer Street, Thorold Supermarket and Ontario Meats & Deli. In 1985, he bought and operated the Thunderbird Motel in Niagara Falls before retiring in 1989. Joe had a love and passion for dancing and music. He played the clarinet and saxophone in the Italian Army Band and in various local bands. He was a member of Club Roma for 51 years and also a member of St. Alfred's Church. Special thanks to his caregiver, Renee, and many of the personal support workers, especially Angel. Joe's family will receive visitors at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton Street, Monday, January 21st from 2-4 and 7-9p.m. A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Alfred's Church, 272 Vine Street, on Tuesday, January 22nd at 11a.m., with entombment to follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. Vigil prayers will be recited in the funeral home chapel on Monday at 3p.m. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation or Wellspring Niagara.
