When I was in St. Catharines visiting my father a month or so ago, time was getting close to head across town to the train station for my scheduled trip back to Toronto. Dad insisted I not take one of the city's expensive taxis, and called Mr. Fitzpatrick †" who, in the great humour (with a little bit of spike in it) I'll always know him for, came over with good words and a "no problem" offer of a way down. We talked about his Leafs and my Bruins and a bit about my late mother, and I had been looking forward to his chiding now that his team is starting to find the upper hand on mine. I am tear-struck by this news: Mr. Fitzpatrick (as, Peggy, you have also faithfully been) was terribly kind to my mother, and an invaluable friend to my father, my family and myself. I will miss him a great deal. Peggy, Oliver, Orla, John and Joe and your families, my heart goes out to you. James Fitzpatrick was an excellent man who has left a huge, positive mark with me.

Uncle James
Can I first of all pass on my condolences from myself, Anita, Conall our wider families and friends who knew James to Peggy, Oliver, John, Joe, Orla, & grandchildren.
James was a gentle giant and yet as hard as nails. Proud of his many achievements, proud of his background and heritage but mostly proud of his family - and he had every right to be. Easy company, witty, kind and generous, enjoyed (and made) the craic and an out and out storyteller from the old school. James excelled at his chosen sport - Gaelic football - representing club, county and country with flair and attained the ultimate accolade, an All-Ireland title when the game was in its pomp and, some would say, its greatest era. A hard act to follow (in fairness, James would have told you that himself!!!!!!) James and the family's hospitality shown to us many times over the years always went above and beyond the call of duty - it was just in his nature. James was a character and we all have so many good memories both in Canada and whenever he came "home". We hold James in the highest respect and esteem (as did my father Gerry) not just as a relative but as a genuine friend and we will miss him. I can't begin to imagine the loss felt by Peggy and family but they can take comfort in the knowledge that James was held in the highest regard by those he knew and worked and played with from all walks of life, creeds, class, colour or country and that his life was "well lived".
May He Rest in Peace.
