Obituary of Delbert Munn

MUNN, Delbert Arnold - Beloved husband of the late Arline (Laine) Munn, passed away in the presence of family members on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at Hotel Dieu Shaver Health & Rehabilitation Centre in St. Catharines at the age of 85. Devoted Father to his only daughter, Penny (Peter) Grossi of St. Catharines and three sons, Tom (late Chris) of Winnipeg, MB, Terry and Randy, both of St. Catharines. Loving grandfather of seven - Christopher and Andrea (Kevin Jeffery) Grossi; Karen Munn, Teresa (Bob) Ross; David (Grace) Munn; Steven (Anita) Munn; and Terry Munn Jr. Proud great grandfather of six - Kristian, Alexa, Makenna, and Keegan Munn; Chrissy and William Ross. Delbert is survived by his brother, Harvey Munn (late Zona) of Bloomfield Ridge, NB; sisters, Addie (late Peter) Norrad of Cartier, ON; Audrey (Ted) Abernethy of Bloomfield Ridge, NB; Marguerite (Sterling) Calhoun of Fredericton, NB; and Loretta (Wilson) Peacock of Williamsburg, NB; brother-in-law, Wilbert 'Libby' (late Anne) Laine of Fort Saskatchewan, AB; and sisters-in-law, Faye (late Scott) Munn of Woodstock, NB and Betty (late Hershell) Munn of Grand Bay, NB. He will be lovingly remembered by many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Also predeceased by parents, Earle and Sadie Munn; twin brother, Hershell (late first wife, Frances); brothers Raymond (late Pauline), Scott and Vaughn Munn; and sister, Merle Black - all of NB; in addition to numerous relatives and friends. A Retiree of Kimberly-Clark paper mill in Merritton, Delbert was a life-time member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 24; former private in the Canadian Armed Forces; former member of the Polish Legions on Vine and Facer Streets; a billiard pool league champion; an avid outdoors man; and nature lover. He performed many jobs during his life time but none more memorable than as a salmon fishing guide on the great Miramichi River in New Brunswick - the place he called 'home'. Delbert will long be remembered for his loving, caring nature; inner strength in times of adversity; positive outlook on life; and ability to bring enjoyment to others by playing games like cards, horseshoes or darts, telling stories or jokes, singing songs about earlier days and simpler times or recitations true to the oral history tradition of his birthplace. Although deeply saddened by his passing, there is relief in knowing he no longer suffers any pain and a gratefulness for the many memories he left all who knew him. A special thank you is extended to: the Shaver team, especially those in palliative care who kept our Father comfortable in his final days; to our family physician, Dr. C.D. Whitty and his staff for their extraordinary provision of health care and services particularly during these last few difficult years of chronic illness; and, to Veteran's Affairs and all local community agencies, services, personnel, friends and relatives, too numerous to name, who were an integral part of enabling our Father to remain home for as long as it was possible to do so. Last but not least, a heartfelt thank you from Penny to children, Christopher and Andrea and husband, Peter who provided Delbert with additional help and support daily that improved his quality of life and gave her the strength to continue for another day. At Delbert's request, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to the George Darte Funeral Chapel (905)937-4444. Memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Cancer or Arthritis Societies would be greatly appreciated by the family.
