There was only one Shureen and we were all blessed to know her. I remember one day when I was little, my mother accompanied her to the hospital while Fred was having heart surgery. Mom said Shureen shouldn't be alone. And after my Dad died, Shureen made sure my mom wasn't alone, checking in on her with weekly phone calls. Mom appreciated those lively conversations. We greatly appreciated Shureen.

a good neighbour
I grew up next door to Shureen and Fred Wood and Linda was my very best friend. On cold rainy or snowy mornings, I was so very thankful that Shureen would drive us to school. She would get into the car in her housecoat and curlers in her hair, ciagareete in her mouth and we'd get in for the short drive. She looked like an angel! I always appreciated this kind act because back then we were not allowed to wear pants to school and the thick brown stockings were not exactly warm enough to keep out the Ontario winters.
I'm sorry that she is gone now.

Our condolences go out to Shureen's family. We have been neighbours for 15 years and it was always a pleasure to talk at the fence or through the kitchen window. Murphy will miss his daily treats at the back yard fence. Thank you for being a great neighbour. You will be missed by all of us. From Jocelyn, Paul, Bennett, Madelyn and Murphy.

The 60s Woman
My childhood view of Shureen was that she was the kind of woman you saw on tv who "had it all". She had evolved from a young 1950s newlywed to a cool, 60s chick: She was a wife, a busy mother, a member of the golf club set, an accomplished painter and seamstress and knitter. Most important was her name "Shureen" - nobody this side of India had it. She owned it! Then there was her feisty personlity. She was in charge and she made no bones about it. She didn't take crap from anyone! We have photos of her wearing striking 60s era clothing that she made herself. She and Fred lived in some pretty fantastic homes. There was one on a steep hill - as a child I thought she and Fred must be really important to live up so high. Then they had a 3-bedroom apartment. 35 years later and it's still the biggest apartment I've ever seen. I wanted to live like that and I still do. Finally, she ended her days in a tiny mid-century gem - a perfect house for this cool, 60s woman. May she rest in peace.

Darlene and I will miss her Saturday evening phone calls when she would "check in" to see how we and Bozo were doing. She was not just an aunt, but a friend.
