I met Leslie while attending Locke's school in St. Thomas,Ontario and
he was my best friend at that time.
We also had a mutual interest in aviation, and were in St.Thomas Air Cadet Squadron together. Later, while we were in high school Leslie and I went to get our Private Pilots Licence together at Hicks & Lawrence Flying School. I alway remember Leslie had a great sense of
humor, and could make everyone laugh.
Later in life, Leslie and I lost touch. I am living in Indiana now,so I only just heard this sad news. My heartfelt sympathy to both
Dianne and Cathy.
Yours truly, Dan Wright

My favorite memory of Les is how he always had time for his friends. He would stop whatever he was doing to ask how I was, and he always meant it. Les loved to hear stories about MacKenzie, cheered him on at hockey games and always greeted the lad with a huge smile and handshake. I remember him scratching his back on the doorway too, checking his pockets for "Leslie's Allowance" whenever anyone had a chocolate bar or raffle ticket to sell for their kids, and how he would root through his desk for dog biscuits whenever a puppy came to visit at work. Every dog in the station would run straight for the newsroom!
I'll always cherish Les for his genuine kindness, wisdom and gentle encouragement that touched countless people. Some became better newscasters, others grew to be better curlers and ball players. We saw and admired the respect, love and acceptance that was equally shared between Les, Mary-Jo, James and Robert, and strive to follow his example to become better parents.
We are all richer for having called him a friend.
We'll miss you, "Uncle Les"!

Dear Mary Jo and boys:
We were very sorry to hear of Les' passing. Doug has fond memories of Les on the football field proudly wearing the "brown and gold" of Central Elgin. I will always remember Les' involvement in the school show and his willingness to give any role a try. Both being from the north end and St. Thomas, Les and I often walked home from school together. With Les, there was never a dull moment....we always found something to chat about.
Our thoughts are with you and your family.

I had the privilege of knowing Les for 30 years, 12 of which working with him at CKTB. He was one of the finest coworkers and friends a guy could ask for. He was tops in his class; a professional through and through. Les was a great inspirer and organizer...always made you feel good about your work and a real team player. He helped make my job fun and was a pleasure to work with and to socialize with...a super person to be around. Thanks for all those great years Les.

Dear Mary Jo, it has been a while since we talked. Sorry for you loss, Jodi and I are thinking of you and the boys at this time of need. I can still remember the times Leslie and I had thru high school. Telling Lydia that we where going to John,s one night and Scotts the next, I think it took her 1 or 2 months to catch on. The driving around in the old beater, or telling a certain someone he would be there at 7 and then show up at 7.30 then still wait another half hour for her to finish getting ready. Then there was the wedding, and the dealings with the Father at St. Annes, good thing he liked your father. Stay strong, and we will see you Monday.

I had the great pleasure of sharing a space in the newsroom with Les for 5 years when I worked at CKTB and HTZFM. I was so young and inexperienced but Les never made me feel that way. He was always kind and generous and a great mentor. Two words he used to say to me as I dashed down the hall to do my newscast..."Don't Run". Words to live by if you don't want to be out of breath when on the air. So many great memories. Thank you Les. My sincere condolences to Mary Jo Robert and James.

Not only did Les Walton have a big voice in the community, he also had a BIG heart! It was always a pleasure to be on the radio with Les promoting the Curl for Cancer because he put so much into the event to be the best. He often talked about his boys and how proud he was of them. I will miss Les and his kind heart.
Fondly,

Leslie was one of my first childhood friends growing up in St. Thomas and we were friends through public and high school. Although I had lost touch over the years, he was a great person and I am sad to hear of his passing. He sounded like he was a wonderful husband, Dad, radio personality and he will be missed. My thoughts are with his family at this time.

We will always remember Les for his "behind the scenes" work in the community. His contributions were immense, but he did it discretely, never seeking personal recognition, just quiet satisfaction. We will never forget that smooth, baritone voice, and that loud, booming laugh. To Mary Jo, James and Robert, our thoughts and prayers are with you at a very difficult time.

I only worked in St. Catharines for a brief time in 1996, but Les was one of the folks who made my stay there so wonderful. In addition to being helpful to me, he was so kind, and on at least one occasion, had me over for dinner with Mary-Jo and the boys. I also got to go for a ride (maybe a little over the speed limit?) in the green MG! My favourite memory of Les will be how he scratched his back on the wood trim of the door frame, not unlike a bear. To this day it's how I scratch my back. My sincere condolences to Les' family.

Friends Like Les Walton come once in a lifetime, if ever. I watched his sons Robert and James grow from infants to the fine young men today. I do wonder how Robert survived his early days considering when Les and I did Saturday mornings at CHSC and CHRE, Robert would be rolling around in one of those baby walkers. When I asked Les about the stairs, he simply stated "He'll be fine." That thundering voice was part of St. Catharines Radio for thirty years. Behind that voice was a great guy to hang around with. He decided to play matchmaker with me and Liz Pearson who worked at Hotel Dieu Hospital in Dialysis with Mary-Jo. Our 17th Anniversay is May 2nd. I reember how determined he was to get a flight to an Inuit community to provide a load of sports equipment he had collected with Don Walker and many other's at the Grantham Optimist Club. Also exposing me to curling with his Curl for Cancer Campaign. He was always up to something for his community. And of course his beloved green MG. We are all lucky to have had this beautiful person touch our lives. I will cherish the memories. My thoughts are with Mary-Jo, Robert and James and family at this time. Mike, Liz and Jennifer.
