Obituary of Walter John Oprzedek
OPRZEDEK, Walter, John- Suddenly and peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, October 12th, 2008 in his 68th year. Loving and caring husband of Maureen. Devoted father and best friend of Wally & Carolyn, Kim & Mark Rupcic, and Tricia & Kevin McCann.
Walt will join his Father, Walter Sr. and †œBabcia† his Mother Sophia, in watching over his adoring grandchildren: Ryan, Conor, Sean, Kieran, Kate, Jocelyn, Sophie, Emma, Jack and Sarah. We all love you Papa.
Survived by his mother-in-Law Isabell Eckhart, who loved him like a son. Also survived by his brother Stan Oprendek, sister Jane Parzygnat, and their families.
Dad was a positive, honest, kind-hearted and generous person. We are forever thankful for the many life lessons he has taught us. In particular, the value of family, and the importance of treasuring the simple things in life, each and every day. His spirit will be a special part of us forever, as we remember the bike rides as he sang to us:
†œSo let the sun shine in
Face it with a grin
Smilers never lose
And frowners never win
So let the sun shine in
Face it with a grin
Open up your heart and let the sun shine in.†
Walt, also had an impact on countless lives in the community, while teaching Physical Education and coaching football at Grantham and Lakeport Secondary Schools for over 30 years.
He was a lifelong member of the St. Catharines YMCA, and handball champion. He will be fondly remembered by both the †œmorning crew† at the Y, and all of the handball guys across Ontario and New York State. He truly was †œthe salt of the earth†.
In addition to his tireless dedication to family and youth, he developed lifelong friendships with his neighbours, and as a member of the Knight†™s of Columbus and Usher†™s Club at St. Denis Roman Catholic Church.
Special thanks to the Paramedics and to the amazing staff at the St. Catharines General Hospital, both in the Emergency and ICU, for their thoughtful support during the most difficult time of our lives, and most importantly for treating our Father with respect and compassion.
The family will receive friends at the George Darte Funeral Home, 585 Carlton Street until Friday at 10:30am. Visiting hours are Thursday 1-3 and 6-9pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Denis Church, 230 Lake Street, at 11am on Friday. Cremation to follow. To honour Dad†™s legacy, donations may be made to the St. Catharines YMCA Strong Kids Program, to provide opportunities for children in need.
