Memories from the Chatham Days
We (I, John Sass, and Jon) met I think in 1950, when we both were members
of the Chatham (ON) Police boys band. We were also paper boys under the
strict supervision of Ray MacDonald. We bonded instantly, and were
inseparable. Jon was by far, a better musician than I, but we and other
Police Boys band members, had a lot of fun making music at high school and
community events. I graduated summa cum nothing from Chatham collegiate in
1953 at the tender age of 16. I decided to take a year's sabbatical and
went to work for the Bank of Toronto. At about the same time, Jon joined
the Bank of Nova Scotia. Both were small branches so as junior clerks, we
pretty much covered the spectrum of activities. During our stints as
messengers, we would meet up for coffee, cigarettes, and story telling .
I went back for a second time through grade 13 in 1954, and was a
classmate of Jon's brother Bill. Jon took a commercial course at the
Chatham Vocational school, and though we remained friends, our paths began
to diverge. Bill, I, and Janet Davidson were in a (mostly) friendly
competition for top marks. I can't remember who won, but we did place
1-2-3.
I stood up with Jon at his wedding to Freda in 1956, but after that, we
went our separate ways.
