Dear family and friends,
Please pass on my love and regards from as far away as Australia - from my Mum and Dad and myself. Stephen opened his home to my parents when they came over to visit me in Montreal in 1987. He brought them such peace knowing that their 16 year old daughter was staying amongst wonderful people like Stephen.
I have always and will always think fondly of Stephen. Remembering him laughing and telling me he was hired at Creations theatre company on the basis of being an aquarian! What a man. What a life. What a loss.
I feel lucky to have met Stephen. And wish his family and friends smiles as they think back upon his character and humour. I know we will here.
Keep in mind - it is morning here when it is night there - so we will keep vigil over him while you are sleeping. Rest well.
Love Tanya

To Mr and Mrs Souter, Greg and Krista,
I wanted to let you know how sorry I was to hear of Steve's long fight with his illness. I had many great times with Steve over the "Ridley years" and when we both were in our early university years. Steve was a great companion, we had many adventures including picnics, visiting the fortune tellers at Niagara Falls, drinking tea at Diana Sweets and Rodman Hall, making a movie on the 406 bypass, dancing at the Library and the Bakery until closing time and then going to Country Style for freshly baked doughnuts. We spent many carefree summers together and in that time I would describe Steve as a strong-willed yet gentle free spirit who was caring, creative and tremendously funny. He was one of the best friends I have ever had, he was my confident and I want you to know how much I enjoyed that part of our lives that we shared. Our paths separated when I moved West, but Steve always remained in my thoughts and I often wondered when our paths would cross again. It is with deep regret that our paths cross under such unfortunate circumstances. I hope you will find the strength to help you through this difficult time.
You are in my thoughts,
Hilary

Dear Mr and Mrs Souter and Greg,
I just wanted to let you know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. Although I only knew Stephen as Greg's older brother, from the thoughts and words expressed in other condolences and from what Greg has told me, he was a gifted artist who has obviously touched many lives. I regret that I am not able to to attend the "Celebration of Stephen's Life" today. Marko

Dear Ken, Betty - Lou, and Greg;
I have so many fond memories of time spent with Stephen during our four years at McGill, and then some. His wit, keen sense of humour, compassion, and artistic flair remain with me still. Stephen and I spent countless hours in our various Montreal apartment kitchens and later, when separated by distance,on the phone talking about everything under the sun. And there was always that "stomach hurting laughter" until the sun came up. It was such a formative time and Stephen's influence was so integral to it all. I am so thankful to have had Stephen as a friend. He made me laugh. He made me think. He made me mad sometimes. I will miss him dearly. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Take care. Much love, Jimmy

There was always something poignant about Stephen. I remember his expressive hands and the cats he doted on in Montreal (especially Bjorn Free, because I loved his name). For almost 20 years we saw each other sometimes. I will miss him and I am so sorry that he is gone so soon. My condolences to Stephen's family and his friends.

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Souter,
Please accept our condolences on Stephen's passing. We met Stephen when he was at McGill studying Theatre. We always enjoyed his sense of humour. He was witty, intelligent and sensitive. We especially remember his commitment to the plays that we were involved in. Although our paths only crossed briefly, we know that he was very loyal and a true friend to those people close to him. He will be missed.
