Always lending a hand.
I have several good stories and fond memories of Al, but one stands out and shows his true character. It was about July of last year and we had entered a stretch of some 30+ degree weather and i of course was working my Sunday afternoon run from Hamilton Post to the St.Catharines/Niagara Falls area when i noticed i was having mechanical problems with my truck. I was instructed by my terminal manager (Carey Oakes) to get the truck to the St. Kitt's yard where i would be able to switch out trucks. I was able to make it there but i was faced with a locked gate. I was able to call Al and of course with his typical sense of humor commented on the fact that it was Sunday and that truck better be broken for him to come in to let me into the yard. So a few minutes later Al rolls in and steps out of his car wearing his typical Sunday family pool party gear which consisted of a snazzy Hawaiian shirt, bathing suit and flip flops and not to mention the fact that he was still soaking wet from the pool...i mean he was still dripping! I laughed and laughed when i saw him show up like that but you know he came in helped me get a truck to use and even took my broken truck for a quick ride to see if he could figure out what was wrong with it. This truly shows his dedication to his company but also to someone in need and Al was always there for anyone in need. I will miss him dearly. Sincerely, Jordon Hodkin (Hamilton Terminal) Doug Coleman Trucking

I have enjoyed knowing and working with Al for the past seven years. He was one of the hardest workers I've known and would always try to do whatever he could to help. I am so glad that I stopped by to see him a few weeks ago. I'm going to miss our talks about work and anything else that came up. I'm especially going to miss the person. My prayers are with Al, Cathy, Jeff and rest of the Schofield family.
Blessings
Rob

Few words can heal the loss of someone so important, but I wish to at least offer my condolences to you all. I regret that I never truly got to now Al, but I have learned in these past few days what kind of man he was. From his unselfishness towards his children and grandchildren, to his dedication to his wife. His sense of humour is the first thing that comes to mind when everyone is asked what they remember of him. He worked hard for what he had but would give it all up if it helped his family. These are all attributes any man would wish to have, and are those of a father and husband any family could wish for.I know at this time you all feel the pain of his loss, but I hope you never forget the happiness that he brought to your lives

My heart goes out to the family.
I was never lucky enough to meet Al in person. I work with him and his wife. We communicated a lot through emails and phone calls. Al and Cathy are 2 people that always made my work life easy and very fun to talk to. I wish i had a more personal experience to share, but the vibe i felt was always a good one. I am truly saddened for the family, and for Cathy. My heart and thoughts are with you all. -Ellie

Lori: I am very sorry for your loss. The relationship between a father and daughter is always very special. The loss that much harder. I will say a prayer that God takes good care of him and you. We never know why these things happen when they do, especailly when it is so sudden. If there is anything I can do please do not hesitate to ask. Unfortunately I will not be able to get there due to previous commitment. I will be there in prayer for both of you and your family.
God Bless
Mike

I didn't know Al for very long, only a matter of months. And despite that, I feel the definite sense of loss here. I have great respect for Al, and a deep appreciation for the way he showed his character. In the past month, with my own struggles, Al was a source of support, dropping messages just to check in and see how things were going. It is that example, and the example of professionalism that he displayed on a daily basis that I hope to carry with me from this day forward.
May God bless you and keep you, my friend, until we meet again.

One Heck Of A Guy
The first time I had the honor of hosting Bert and Min at my house was during a trip they made to the states to see Don. Don and I were partners in crime and I was only too happy to invite them all over for some Cajun grilled steak. Bert, true to form, was all in.
Now, this was back in the days when I was much younger and prone to excess, thus my friendship with Don. So by the time Don, parents in tow, arrived I had already had a few beers. What I quickly came to realize was that Bert and Don had also primed the pump, and were pretty much in the same boat that I was. A great time quickly ensued.
By the time I actually remembered the goal and actually started to grill, I was, shall we say, †œfuzzy†. I barely remember losing all dexterity flipping a steak and the steak flying through the air until its†™ eventual destination landing firmly on my driveway.
Immediately Bert jumps up and shouts, †œI†™ll take that one!†.
Now, while I appreciated Bert†™s obvious attempt to try to get me through my immediate embarrassment, I firmly opposed. However, true to form, Bert in his stubbornness insisted that he eat it and after debating with him, I knew when I was whipped. So, I took the steak in and scrubbed it under water and took it back out and put it back on the grill and cooked it to completion.
Bert ate the entire steak and raved about it. He insisted it was the best steak that he†™d ever eaten and proceeded to go on and on about it.
After several years I had all but forgotten about this but was reminded upon a reunion (once again, with Don......anyone see a pattern here) on a business trip I took to Niagara Falls with…Don. We met Bert and Min at a restaurant and they were unaware that I was coming. It was funny because Bert jumped right up and shook my hand with that smile on his face like zero years had passed since he had last seen me. After we sat down, he proceeded to tell me the steak story and, again, I had all but forgotten it. He then went on and on, once again, about how good the steak had been.
That was Bert. In a nutshell. Compassionate, Gracious. I am proud and honored to have known him.
Bert, you will be missed, my friend. Rest in peace because if anyone deserves it, you did.

Chris and I are the sons of Dauphne. We would just like to say that even thought we haven't seen uncle Al for a little while we will miss him and always think of him, and remember what a good man he was. This will be a sadness for the whole family for quite a while, but as we all know, time heals all wounds.

You will always be in my thoughts for the rest of my life. I will never forget you. I will miss you, as so many will agree that you touch all of us within, your always respectful, hardworking, true and honest. You thought first for others and then yourself. You are like a bother to me and I appreciate everything you gave to my family and me.
I will miss your laugh, love for life and the amazing stories. I was always jealous of the things you purchased Cathy for her birthday, anniversary, Christmas, or just because (which was quite often). I hold great love and respect for you. I have from the first day I meet you. You are a great father, grandfather and friend. You always spoke so highly of your children and giggled like a child when speaking about the grandchildren. You played a great Santa without the costume……..Toys R Us had you on their calling list.
Thank you for the times you spent with my family. My girls love you so much. They still speak affectionately about the nasty bird that bit them at Al and Cathy†™s home. When visiting St Catharine†™s it was an open door policy, greeted with a hug, laugh, and meal. Forget about the hotel, as beds were included in the visit.
I am so lucky to hear your voice last week. I adore and love you my friend!
