Margaret O'Halloran

Obituary of Margaret Christine O'Halloran

Margaret O'Halloran MB, ChB Jan 6 1935- Sept 11 2013 Margaret was born in Motherwell, Scotland, in 1935 and was a welcome second daughter to Margaret and Michael Donnelly and beloved sister to Marie. With brothers Hugh, Jim, Jerry, Andy and Gilbert already there, and with Brian and Des to follow, Marie needed the solidarity of another girl and someone to share the housework! A brilliant student, Margaret was determined to take up a profession and convinced her parents that she should go to medical school prior to becoming a nun. Her intentions of joining the convent foundered on a rock when she met Dr. Peter O’Halloran during her time in med school. They married in 1960 and celebrated almost 51 years of marriage before he passed away in 2011. She was an achiever - she had four children, Harry Christine Brian and Marion; a fulfilling career that she loved amidst the wonderful medical community in St Catharines and the time somehow in her busy days to give to many friendships and charitable causes. These causes included more than 30 years of raising money and awareness for Save the Children as a member and then eventual President of the St Catharines Volunteer Branch. She has been recognized by the Rotary Club, Save the Children Canada and with the awarding of a Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for her charity and leadership. Margaret was a leader to her friends, within the community and in her family, especially to her 4 children and 9 grandchildren, who are proud to walk in her footsteps.
