Obituary of Gordon William Smith

SMITH, GORDON WILLIAM October 21, 1933 – February 19, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a dear husband and father Gordon Smith on February 19, 2014. Gordon passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family after a short, courageous and valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Muriel (Knight) of 51 years, son Lloyd (Sandra) and daughter Karen (Mary). Born in Brantford, Ontario, Gordon was the son of the late Leonard and Sarah (Benson) Smith. He is predeceased by his brothers Doug (Betty) and Norm (survived by sister-in-law Colleen). He leaves behind brothers-in-law Clair Knight (late Lillian), Bruce Knight (Jean), the late Ralph Knight (Catharine) as well as many nieces and nephews. Gordon graduated from McMaster University in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts degree followed by a degree in Physical Education in 1959. Shortly after graduating Gordon commenced teaching for the Lincoln County School Board where he served as Head of Physical Education at Grantham High School. During his 34 year career, Gordon loved teaching as well as coaching many sports and formed many long lasting friendships with his work colleagues as well as students. In his retirement years he loved to landscape and garden and shared many of his plants with friends and family. He enjoyed golfing and continued to make physical fitness an integral part of his life. The family wishes to thank ParaMed Home Healthcare, CCAC nurses and Dr. R. Boily for all of their support during Gord’s illness. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are entrusted with George Darte Funeral Home. A celebration of Gordon’s life will take place on Sunday, February 23rd at the White Oaks Conference Resort and Spa, 253 Taylor Road, Niagara on the Lake, ON. Visitation from 12 noon to 2:00 pm followed by a celebration of his life and reception. In memory of Gordon, the family requests that you perform a random act of kindness.
