I was just talking to someone about Vincent and the work he did in Bosnia in 1998/9 (I worked closely with him) I have such happy memories of him cooking pasta while singing opera, telling me his car had been stolen and driving him home as I knew he would have forgotten he walked to work. I last bumped into him around 2000 in Manchester. Although it has been a while and I’m deeply upset I didn’t realise he had passed I want you to know even now people think of him fondly, smile at his memory and will always be great full for having known him

Dear Jennifer: it was only yesterday I learnt about Vince and I lit two candles: one memorial and one in a nearby church. As you know we spent much time on field visits all over the world and we enjoyed our work and humour. He was a great international person.

Travelling with Vince
In the years 1995-97 Vince asked me to join him in several criminal justice assessment missions he was undertaking as the UN interregional advisor. I travelled with him to Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia and South Africa. I was fascinated by his approach to different cultures, which was a mixture of human curiosity and professional application of norms and principles. Working with him never sounded like working, he was able to find interesting aspects even in the most boring situation. I recall our team visiting the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, located at 4,200 metres above the sea. After travelling hours with an old car, which we had to push uphill on occasions, we finally reached our destination. It was almost dark and a long journey back was in front of us. Still, Vince insisted to stop to talk with the officers at the border, to listen to their stories and to share some of our food and soft drinks with them. On the way back, we were stopped at a checkpoint by a patrol. Here the officers had already had a few drinks too many and started questioning who we were and why were we on the top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere so late at night. In doing that, they were carelessely handling their guns, which made me feel a little anxious. Vince stayed very calm and maintained a very important looking posture, extracted his visiting card and pointed at the blue UN logo. His regal behaviour impressed the officers so much that they let us go without further hassle.

I was deeply shocked to hear about Vince. We met while we worked for AI, later in Nepal when he came to my country, and then from Nigeria he used to send his weekly diaries which I read with interest. Three weeks before his death, I was in touch on email. He was a very nice man, full of energies. I pray for the peace to his soul.

I have had no contact with Vince since about 1967. However, in the 1960's we spent many Sundays together at inter-high school meetings of the model United Nations. I passed much time with Vince including meals in his home (the basement, the ground floor being covered in plastic and available only for special visitors).
I have difficulty remembering how and why we lost contact all those years ago. No doubt different universities and career paths played their role and, while I think we both graduated from high school in the same year, I seem to recall Vince travelled and worked for a year or 2 before going to university.
In any event, I fondly remember our time together, our plotting and planning and joy at success and less than joy at failure as we tried to play at being country representatives for a model United Nations. As well, I must mention Vince's enthusiasm and infectious joie de vivre, which I well remember all these years later. I tell you all of this simply to add a somewhat different dimension to Vince from what I read in the newspaper about him and to say how much I regret that we did lose contact. My sympathies for your loss.

Vince the law professor
From January to April of 1979, Vince was my professor of criminal law and procedure at McGill University. In class I would sit at the back with my friends Patrick Healy, now a judge in Quebec, and Terry Kirichenko, a criminal lawyer in Toronto, and sometimes quite animatedly discuss the cases and principles Vince was trying to teach to the rest of the class. We couldn†™t help ourselves; Vince generated such an enthusiasm in us for the subject just by his own animated and provocative teaching style. Our discussions did not escape his notice, and he would interject by suddenly firing questions at the three of us. I†™m happy to say we usually measured up to his challenges, because his was one of the few classes where we came prepared. Such was the effect he had on our studies of the otherwise dry subjects we had to take. But Vince rewarded our enthusiasm with good marks and, more important, a personal friendship that extended outside the class room, most often at the Grad Club. All of our paths diverged since graduation from law school, and two of us went on to do graduate degrees, with Patrick specializing in criminal law. Although I took another specialty, of all the law professors who taught me, Vince remains at my memory†™s top as one of the best, not just for his mastery of criminal law, but for his humanity.

Like many others who are working for the War of 1812 Bicentennial I only had the privilege of knowing and working with Vincent for the past two years. In that time Vincent made leaps and bounds for the War of 1812 cause not only for the Niagara region but for all the War of 1812 regions across Ontario. He was instrumental in soliciting the federal government and providing me personally with resources and guidance regarding our regions bicentennial efforts and will be greatly missed.
Reading Vincent†™s passed accomplishments he certainly led a full and rewarding life and has left behind a humanitarian legacy that has made others people†™s lives better around the world. He started the Niagara Regions War of 1812 Bicentennial legacy efforts and the torch has now been passed to all of us to ensure that his legacy is fulfilled. He will be greatly missed!

While I only worked with Vince for a year and a half as a member of the Thorold War of 1812 Bicentennial Committee I enjoyed his receptiveness to new ideas and felt he had a sincere desire to make the Niagara 1812 Bicentennial celebration the best in the country. He will be deeply missed.
