Obituary of Monica Koziej
KOZIEJ-Wowchuk, Monica (nee Sobkowich)
June 5, 1920 – May 20, 2014: Passed away quietly with family at her side at Meadows of Dorchester. Monica is predeceased by husband Walter Koziej (1985), son Victor Koziej (1996), second husband Henry Wowchuk (2005), grandson Adam Nikitczuk (1983) and her parents, Anne (1974) and Karol Sobkowich (1983). She is survived by her son Edwin (Beverley) Koziej and her daughter Christine (Casey) Nikitczuk; grandchildren Kristina (Michael) Ilnicki, Edwin Jr. (Sharlene) Koziej, Lorinda (Craig) Reed, Angela Koziej, Daniel and Matthew Nikitczuk, Stephanie Groves and Paul Koziej; great grandchildren Raymond and Danika Ilnicki, Xander and Brenden Koziej, Sebastian Reed and Benjamin Groves. Monica was born in Kobylowlocki, Poland and came to Canada in 1935 with her mother to join her father. She met Walter while they worked on a farm in Beamsville, married in 1940 in the original OLPH Church at Niagara, Garnet and Currie Streets. They spent the next 30 years farming in St. Catharines Louth Township area and raising their family. After losing Walter, she married Henry Wowchuk in 1988. For many years, Monica was an active member of the Canadian Polish Society, the Polish Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary, the OLPH Ladies’ Auxiliary and a parishioner at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Polish Church. Many thanks to the Nurses, Assistants, Doctor and PSW workers at Meadows of Dorchester. Visitation will take place at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton St, on Sunday, May 25, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Prayers will be held in the funeral home Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 5 Oblate St, St. Catharines on Monday, May 26, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Rite of Committal to follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. Donations can be made to the Arthritis Society or a charity of your choice.
