Obituary of Emery James Horvath

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Jim passed away peacefully at his home in St. Catharines after a courageous struggle with Melanoma Cancer at the age of 85 with his family by his side. Beloved Husband to Céline for 54 years and Father of Lisa (Wayne), Paul and André (Kathy). Proud Papa to 4 grandchildren Kyle, Shaelyn, Tristan and Ryan. He will be missed by his sister Gabrielle Horvath Fischer, 8 nephews and nieces, cousins in Hungary and by many friends and loyal customers. Jim was born in Saskatoon by his recently immigrated Hungarian Parents. At an early age they moved to Division Street in St. Catharines. He travelled on the Queen Mary back and forth to Hungary 3 times from 1936-38. When WW2 broke out, Jim remained in Hungary and studied to be a Horologist until he received his passport to Canada in 1950. He returned to St. Catharines where he opened a small shop on St. Paul Street called The Watch Clinic. Later he expanded his business to include clocks, watches and jewellery and moved to a larger store on St. Paul Street called Horvath Jewellers. In 1976 he sold the business to VandenDool Jewellers. He continued to repair Clocks, Watches and Jewellery from his home until 4 months ago. In 1974, Jim restored the Court House Clock in Market Square and maintained it until 2013. He also restored and maintained the Ridley Tower Clock and the Tower clock in Cambridge, Ontario. He spoke Hungarian, German, and English. He loved to sing in the Hungarian, German and St. Julia Church Choirs. He had a musical ear and played the Violin, Piano, Accordion and the Cimbalom. He loved to travel to Hungary, cook and drive his 65 Thunderbird.
