Obituary of Edith Rossetto
ROSSETTO (GRECO), Edith (Eda, "Iduccia") on Thursday, November 13th, at age 92. She passed at home, surrounded by her loving family and in peace to the arms of the Lord. Survived by daughter Doreen and her loved son-in-law Gordon McKenna, devoted granddaughter Linda and her husband Rudy Sobschak and two great-grandchildren Katharine and Michael, all of whom she was so proud; one sister Ersilia Marino, and two younger brothers ("the boys") Nick (Sophie) Greco and Sam (Madeline) Greco and sister-in-law Yola. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. Edith was predeceased by her parents, Antonio Greco (1965) and Lucia Raimondo (1937), sister Josephine (1983) and brothers Johnny (1978), Danny (1986), Pat (2011) and 2 infant sisters Ester (1932) and Mary (1937). Family was everything to Edith. Also predeceased by Roy Baggs (2010), very special, devoted friend and confidant, for 26 years. He treated her royally ("Driving Miss Daisy"). In their younger years, they spent many hours "tripping the light fantastic", travelling, playing cards, enjoying each others company and taking superb care of each other. Born in Thorold, Ontario on September 27th, 1922 to Antonio Greco and Lucia Raimondo; Mom attended Prince of Wales School in Thorold, where she received awards for her exquisite penmanship. As a young girl, she and her siblings travelled to St. Catharines and worked the farms. Being a small person, the farm owner moved her from the fields to work in the barns with the grown up ladies making her feel privileged. Having led a very sheltered life, at age 17 she married Sam Rossetto in 1940, moved to St. Catharines and at age 20, bore one child, Doreen. Mom's life changed dramatically for a second time at age 56, taking a great leap of faith and with the help of her family and friends, moved forward, at last coming into her own. Mom didn't look back - her only regret - that she never learned to drive an automobile. She worked for a very short time as an office cleaner, then as a retailer at Jen's St. Paul Street bakery for 3 years. Mom continued to bloom and grow developing her natural artistic talents at age 60 by attending art classes at Dunlop Drive Seniors Centre, winning several ribbons for her work. She was a very talented artist but too modest to allow a one woman show. She was never too busy to visit and chat, or play euchre or Rummoli, nickel bingo, card games or watch the 25 cent movie at Ina Grafton, go shopping for a new blouse or take a quick run to the Casino playing penny or nickel machines. While riding in the car, she had great fun singing along with the radio often doing the harmonizing. Mom enjoyed each day, old and new friends and living in her Ina Grafton condo, although she missed the balcony of her former apartment. Mom maintained and delighted in her independence for 36 years, growing through the years, gracefully flowing from one life phase to the next and peacefully into the Lords arms. Mom, Mother-in-law, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Friend - we love you a bushel and a peck. Edith was a member of St. Alfred Roman Catholic Church, Dunlop Drive Seniors Centre, where she danced, played euchre and learned to play snooker. Also served on the original board of the former Grantham Seniors. Visitation will be held at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines on Sunday, November 16th from 2-4 (Vigil prayers at 3 p.m.) and 7-9 p.m. and Monday, November 17th from 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Alfred Roman Catholic Church, 272 Vine St., St. Catharines on Tuesday, November 18th at 11 a.m. Rite of Committal to follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Niagara Warehouse of Hope, St. Alfred Out of the Cold program, St. Alfred St. Vincent de Paul Society or charity of choice. Peace be with you.
