Obituary of Mary Borowsky
BOROWSKY, Mary (nee Tuchtie)
Passed away peacefully on Friday, December 12th, 2014 at NHS-St. Catharines 20 days after her 96th birthday. Loving mother and best friend of her daughter, Lesia. Predeceased by her husband Michael (1993), her parents, John (1931) & Catherine (1971) Tuchtie and her brother Nicholas Tuchtie (pilot officer RCAF in WW11, 1943).
Mary was born on November 22, 1918 in Elma, Manitoba. She lived in Chatham, ON until she married Michael in 1941 and moved to St. Catharines where she worked on the family farm on Lakeshore Road until 1969. She was a member of Sts. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, the Ukrainian Women's Org. (OYK) where she held different positions on the executive, the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League, Ukr. Seniors Hroups Novii Obrii and Myrhorod, and was a founding member of the Ukrainian Credit Union (1943). Mary was also a lifetime member of the St. Catharines Horticultural Society.
She enjoyed singing and sang in several choirs in the 1940's to 1960's. Mary belonged to the Goldenayers (Dunlop Drive Seniors Choir) in the 1990's and the Ukrainian Women's Choir Desna. She enjoyed working outdoors in the garden, canning her own fruits, going to Myrhorod Bingo, watching Ukrainian TV programs and listening to Ukr. radio programs. In 1991, Mary was diagnosed with macular degeneration but that didn't slow her down. She took the paratransit to attend choir practices, meetings, Myrhorod seniors and concerts.
She loved being Ukrainian and was very active in the Ukr. community but she was a proud Canadian and insisted on voting in every election, the last being the municipal election in October.
