Obituary of Dr. David Stewart Howes

HOWES, Dr. David Stewart: JANUARY 17TH, 1940 TO JANUARY 12TH, 2015- At the Niagara Health System (St. Catharines) from the debilitating effects of cancer. A true pillar of the community, David's impact and influence was felt from Port Dalhousie to Brock University and many points in between. Generous of his time, talent and treasure throughout his eventful life, he was a sportsman, businessman and philanthropist. His dedication to encouraging sports activities and organizations is reflected in his inclusion in the St. Catharines Sports Hall of Fame as a builder. His commitment to maintaining Lincoln Fabrics Ltd., succeeding his father in 1983, as a locally owned and operated business in the forefront of the specialty textile manufacturing market, was matched by his interest in the preservation and rejuvenation of the Port Dalhousie Harbour area. His devotion to Brock University, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees and made significant donations to the David S. Howes Theatre and the Sir Isaac Brock statue, was recognized by the conferring of an honourary Doctorate on Oct. 13, 2012. David designed the Spirit of Brock Medal for special deserving students and was the only non-Brock graduate to receive this prestigious medal in 2012. David was also the recipient of Rotary's very special Paul Harris Fellowship Award. Predeceased by his parents, Stewart and Phyllis, his loss will be keenly felt by his wife, Susanne Di Lalla, her children Christopher and Andrea and their children, his brother Jim and sister-in-law Magda and his niece, Tanya. A legion of friends will miss his appetite for adventure and fun and his dry humour. His business associates will miss his managerial talents and wise counsel. St. Catharines mourns the loss of a great steward of the community. Cremation has taken place. Visitation for family and friends will be at GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton Street, St. Catharines (905) 937-4444 on Tuesday, January 27th 2015 from 7-9p.m. and Wednesday, January 28th from 2p.m to 4p.m. and 7p.m. to 9 p.m. A brief prayer ceremony for David will take place on Wednesday, January 28th at 4p.m. in the funeral home. A celebration of David's life will take place at Brock University, 500 Glenridge Avenue, St. Catharines upon the occasion of the dedication of the Statue of Sir Isaac Brock on a date to be determined this spring.
