Obituary of Lorraine Margaret Leyden (nee Hayes)
Leyden, Lorraine (nee Hayes) - Peacefully at the St. Catharines General Hospital, early on April 15, 2015. Beloved wife of Brian. Survived by son Christopher and daughters Myra and Anne (Michael Meyers).; sister Lynne (David Warren), god-daughter Cheryl (Wadsworth-Hayes) and granddaughters Katie, Haley and Camille. She will be sadly missed by other family members including Kate, Sarah, James, and their families.
Lorraine was born in Winnipeg and deeply loved her new community when her parents (Syd and Minnie Hayes) moved to Port Dalhousie in 1952. She was widely respected for her tireless and extensive volunteer work and was recognized with many awards. She received the Order of Niagara from Bishop Ralph Spence in 2003, the Helen Keller Award in 2002, the Queen's Golden Jubilee the same year, and amongst others the St. Catharines Civinc Award of Merit.
Lorraine served four terms as President of the Earl Mountbatten Chapter of the IODE, and for many years served as a Provincial Director, travelling widely around the Province. She initiated the highly successful Linhaven Home volunteers Fund Raising Campaign 20 years ago, and remained chair until her passing. In 1973, she was appointed secretary-treasurer, and organizing manager, for the St. John's Cemetery in Port Dalhousie and had completed more than 42 years of immaculate, voluntary, service by the time of her passing.
Memorial Service will be celebrated on Monday April 20, 2015 at St. John's Anglican Church, 80 Main Street, Port Dalhousie Ward. Service at 11 am. Guests will be received in the Narthex of the Church starting at 9:30 am. Reception to follow in the church. Memorial donations to St. John's Anglican Church or Linhaven Home.
