I was saddened to hear about the passing of our uncle. As a child , I remember being excited about his upcoming visit to our home. Playing cards with Philip, especially "21" or "scat" was almost a nightly tradition in our house. The few coins I may have won or lost during our games were nothing compared to the fun and laughs we had while playing cards with him.
He even made it on television. I remember watching "Land & Sea" on CBC one evening many many years ago. At that time, he was on the the ship " The Black Bay" I think, and sure enough during the program, we saw him a few times walking about. I doubt his name appeared in the credits, but he was the star of the show in our house.
Rest in peace dear Philip.
Save a place for us at the card table.
We'll bring lobster and beer.
Love you always,
André

The world is far, far away it has ceased to exist for you. It is gone from your mind, with all its businesses and ambitions its prosperities and disasters, its exultations and despairs, its joys and griefs and cares and worries.
They are no concern of yours anymore, they have gone out of your life, they are a storm that has passed and left a deep calm behind.
Pilot how far from home? Not far, not far tonight, a flight of spray, a seabirds flight, tossing foam, and then the lights of home.
Pilot how far from home? The great stars pass away before him, a flight of spray, moons as a flight of foam. I see the lights of home. Surely sunlight and starlight shall favour me on the voyage I take and I shall rest in the port of my God forever.
Memories happy and sad are flooding my mind and heart. I miss my Philly already. You are free at last. So long ole pal!
Love Marion

I knew Philip because of my sister Lorraine and family. It was always a pleasure to see him and shake that big hand of his. He was always pleasant to talk to whether it was about cooking or sports. Because I worked in the hospital we would always chat about that. Philip was a kind man and generous man and was good to the boys whom we would always chat about one of them. It was always a pleasure to pick him up or drop him off . At family get togethers sometimes holidays and Christmas we would have him for dinner. I know he felt part of the family. That's all you can ask for. He enjoyed his food especially when I was cooking. Philip was set in his own way you could say he did it his way. I will miss seeing him at work with either one of the boys or Brandi and Eva. It was nice to sit and have lunch with him. When he was in the hospital he said to me the captain was waiting for him to board the ship. The captains there and the ship is in sail well my friend. RIP Philip

We met Philip when Auntie Marion brought him over when ever the ship came to Thunder Bay. He became part of our family when he stole my mom Helen's heart and was her everything, waiting to hear from him many times a day. She loved him a lot to the end. He talked about moving to Thunder Bay to live and come fishing, but he was freaked out about the mosquitoes and the cold. He told us alot of stories about the Gerard boys and their antics, calling them the Musketeers and he loved being an influence in their lives. He teased Mom about her cooking, testing her knowledge of ingredients always chuckling when she would get flustered when he watched her.He had a great sense of humour, a caring heart, great wit and was sharp as a tack when it came to dollars and cents and sense. He will not be forgotten. Deepest sympathy to the Landry family and Lorraine and family. The Baysarowich family

Philip was a very dear friend of mine. As shipmates we worked in the day and talked for hours in the evening sharing stories and laughter. Sky King loved to play practical jokes on me jumping unexpectedly out of the broom closet or leaving things on my door. We've kept in touch calling each other regularly.I imagine he is with my sister Helen and enjoying the freedom from sickness and stress. I will miss him calling me "Miss Marion".I hope there are horseraces in heaven. "Let's Go Blue". I hope you rest in peace now. Deepest sympathy to Philip's family and a grateful thank you to Lorraine and her Boys for looking after Philip in his time of sickness and need. Fare well Friend and see you again in port when the ship docks. Love Marion Dorota

I met Philip 29 years ago and from that 1st day he became my family. Philip did everything for myself and my children from the 1st day they where born. I said at the hospital a year ago if you every need my help all you have to do is ask and we are here for you. Over a year ago he asked for my help and without question myself and my kids where there for him everyday. Why, because we loved and cared for him just like everyone else.
I thank you Philip for allowing myself and my kids to be a part of your life. For being a friend and a Great Uncle, for providing advise to my son's when they weren't sure what to do, for bringing laughter into our lives.
We will never forget you.

What can I say about Philip. He had a kind heart was very generous to his family, wherever there was a need he was there to help. The many times we visited him, we would always argue but in a fun way never with harsh words. I think he always enjoyed those sparring matches we had. We will miss him and our visits.
He was always in my prayers and will continue to be there.
To his brothers and sisters and other family members, our sincere sympathy.

A man with an opinion, a man with goals, a man with a heart of gold there aren't enought words to fully describe my uncle. I remember the fishing trips, the camping and I remember being chased around by a lobster scared to death while he would laugh. When I was young I would meet him at the docks as he passed through, he would always throw money over the side, always though he was the coolest guy on these big boats . Never met a man or anyone so independent he never gave up in anything, he fought until the very end In All his endeavours. I spent three straight weeks with uncle while he was in the hospital, I learned so much more from him during this time, his days hunting, his dog spot and his early life endeavours. I am happy to say that Phillip lived happily at the end of his years, many times he would say how he never lived in such a beautiful apartment, he had family everyday visit him , he knew he was loved problably why he stayed in St catharines.
Take care Turk

I've had a hard time leaving words behind this past few days. From the day I was born, put into your arms, every moment spent you thought me, from being on the bus and using my young age to get anything cheap, you to using your elder age to get things cheaper! Teaching me the passion and patience in a game of chess and I'm still not giving up till I beat that masterchess game! Every lesson you thought me on how to read the race track book to the point that I'd walk in with 20$ and walk out with 300$ you loved to gamble. Never liked anything like the casino or that didn't give him a far chance against the odds and would never go over board, thought me to hold back at times cause it won't be worth it. And like the horse races he loved his 6/49 and pro-line and you thought me well on that to. And you can never forget his favorite game the stocks, always told me "books are knowledge and what I teach you don't abuse it for it all take the best of you, money never last forever"

Our thoughts and prayers are with my brother/brother-in -law Phillip at this time. We have many happy memories of Phillip during his trips to visit us in Cape Breton. We had lots of happy times with Phillip , he would play pranks on us and show us his card tricks. We were always glad to have him visit with us. He shared a birthday with our son Nathan, so they would always talk to each other on their special day. He told many stories about fishing and hunting, he had a great shot and we would call him "rifle man". He was born by the sea and spent most of his life on the sea. Even though he left home at a young age, his family was always important to him and he would always keep in touch with his family.
RIP Phillip we will miss you.

The memories you have left us ...
As a child, I remember Uncle Philip visiting my family in New Brunswick. He would take us skating at the rink. We would also play cards all the time and inevitably he would take great pleasure at celebrating his victories while we cried. My brothers and I would fight over his bag of coins and he would make us share the spoils.
As everyone will attest, he loved playing pranks on people. In the mall, he would hide and make us search for him. We had a few nicknames for him. Most knew him as "The Turk" and then there was the "Sky King" from his days of hiding booze in the rafters of his bedroom on the ships.
He loved to bet, whether at cards, the lottery, the horses, etc. He also loved to play checkers and chess.
Philip was a great uncle and he will be missed dearly by myself, Carolyn, Riley and Mackenzie. We mourn his loss.
