Obituary of Mykola (Nicholas) Gaida

GAIDA, Mykola (Nicholas) "Nick"- A wonderful remarkable husband, father and grandfather Nicholas Gaida left us on January 1st, 2011 in St Catharines Ontario. He leaves to mourn his devoted and loving wife Mary Marion, his children Michael and Sophia, Stephen and Mary, Alicia and Randy and his grandchildren Trisha, Joshua and John. Dearly loved stepfather to Victoria and Stuart, Cynthia and Peter, Allan and Lisa, Peter and Judith and his step grandchildren Heather, Samantha, John, Eileen, Colleen, William, Andrew, Patrick and Adam. Predeceased by his wife Margaret (1981) and sister Madeline and survived by his sisters Julie and Stephanie of Rochester, N.Y. Remembered fondly by nieces and nephews, friends and relatives in Western Canada, Ottawa and the U.S.A. His mother in law Eileen Welch. Nick was born in Ukraine October 28th, 1922, and immigrated to Canada in January of 1948. In 1949 he brought his parents and sisters to Canada. He was a proud Canadian and had his Canadian citizenship papers with him at all times. He was a founding member of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church and a council member since 1962 to present. Nick was also a member of The Seniors Club and The Black Sea Hall Association. After retirement from the City of St Catharines Engineering Department, he spent time traveling, golfing and gardening. He could put a stick in the ground and a beautiful flower would bloom for him. No matter where he traveled he made many lasting friends. Nick will be sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved him. Mr. Gaida is resting at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 585 Carlton Street, St Catharines. The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, January 4th from 2p.m.-9p.m. Panachyda will take place at 7p.m. in the funeral home. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday January 5th at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Church at 10a.m. Rite of Committal at Victoria Lawn Cemetery to follow. Memorial remembrances to a Charity of Choice would be appreciated by the family.
