Dear family of the most wonderful Deb,
I'm in utter loss for words. I had thought about Deb last week with the recent passing of Christi - of one the many students she impacted and that has inspired her so much. I had planned to reach out this week to reconnect and missed the chance.
Deb taught me so much about myself, about the art forms I know and love, and about community leadership. She was one of the biggest supporters of TAP, a local NGO, and was by my side as we launched the India Program in 2011/2012. Every doubt I had during my B.Ed and M.Ed, she was there to guide and encourage me. But it wasn't just me. She was an amazing Professor to all of her students, and impacted the Niagara arts community in so many ways. Her kindness, generosity and ability to always see the best in people are just some of things I admired about her.
She was an absolutely remarkable woman and I will never forget her. Rest easy, Deb.

Our thoughts and condolences to her family. Words cannot describe her impact to so many people in so many ways. Debra gave me my first teaching section at E. L. Crossley 20 years ago and became my dear friend and mentor. Today, every drama class I teach and every lesson I create are products of her influence on me. This news saddens the heart but her legacy lives on in all the people she has touched. Thanks Debra.

She was a brilliant teacher, a most valuable team member and an enthusiastic advocate for the Arts. But above all, she was a wonderful person and I know she will be sorely missed by you, her family, as well as her family of educators at Brock.

Debra was an important part of the Brock and drama communities and will be deeply missed. She was a pleasure to work with and always supportive of students and colleagues. I have had the opportunity to be her colleague at Brock and in the school system for many years. She always took the time to be friendly,to know and care about others and to share her passion for education and learning. Her loss will be felt by all whose lives she touched. I was so saddened and shocked by Debra's passing. I had the pleasure of working with and for her during her first years at the college of Ed. I learned SO much from her by teaching her classes for her at Crossley. She was so generous with her expertise and resources. Later on I enjoyed numerous workshops led by her. Debra was a true artist and mentor. Her passion for theatre was contagious. She was adored and respected by her students. My sincerest condolences for your loss, she will be sorely missed

Debra was a wonderful, kind, generous spirit who I came to know as a valued support and guide in St. Catharines. I will cherish every interaction we had together at Carousel Players. Her advocacy for quality youth arts programming was inspiring. Her enormous generosity to my daughter and I as new residents to the community will be with us forever. She is in our thoughts and will be greatly missed.

Debra was an inspiration. Her passion for theatre and theatre in education was matched by her understanding and care for people. She was clear and kind in her objections and effusive in her praise. We already miss her terribly and are saddened we cannot be there tomorrow to celebrate her life.
She could always surprise you with insight or a pointed comment. I will never forget the time we met to discuss an upcoming show-based program at Carousel Players. I had a plan; we would focus on this one element of the play to draw the students into it. Debra simply said "I thought we would do this exercise instead" and she couldn't have been more correct. She knew the exact and simple activity that would open up this play for the students. In that moment, I felt a rush of gratitude for having someone who knew what we were trying to do and who we were doing it for far better than I did.
We send love, prayers and strength from Winnipeg.

I am heartbroken to learn of the sudden passing of my dear friend and mentor, Dr. Debra McLauchlan. Debra was my high school drama teacher at EL Crossley and her impact on my life is nearly impossible to articulate. As a teacher, she made space for me to learn about myself, and shared a deep well of tools she'd masterfully honed to aid in my own self-expression. Above all, she believed in me, especially when many people in my life at the time had lost hope in my 'potential'. Since high school, we've remained closely connected. When lost I would go to her, and, like the beacon of light she was to so many, she would help me find my way again. My heart aches that we've lost her. My most sincere condolences to her beloved family and the countless people touched by her extraordinary life.

I have known Debra for many years, first, as a colleague and in recent years as a bridge partner. As I was Brock staff, Debra always treated me with courtesy and respect and I valued her support and wise counsel, liberally sprinkled with a generous dose of dramatic flair. As a bridge partner, she would always rise to the challenge when I pushed her to fulfill a tougher contract, and of course her photographic memory was a huge asset. I am going to miss her partnership and her lively and compelling stories. At the last game we played, Debra told us about writing and then giving the eulogy for Christine Rougoor, a Concurrent Education graduate, we both knew, who had just passed. The effort, care and passion to produce and perform the best eulogy she could to honour Christine and comfort her family was evident in Debra's telling. My last memory of Debra was her inviting me and my husband to be her guests at the Carousel fundraiser on my birthday last week. We had a great time and my only consolation, is that my final conversation with her was to thank her for her generosity, tell her how inspiring she is and compliment her on wearing the periwinkle blue dress that suited her under the stage lights. I was rewarded with her sparkly eyes and cheeky giggle with her finger touching her lips that typified her warm and bubbly personality. She will be sorely missed.
I hope some stories like mine will add to the memories to help you at this difficult time and in the years to come.

Debra has been my guiding light for the past 11 months during my graduate studies. I am deeply grateful that I had the chance to spend time with her, learn from her, and benefit from her dedication to my success. Words cannot express how I feel right now nor can they ease the grief of her family and friends. I know she would want me to continue on with my work and not wallow in my grief. She always kept me on my toes with high expectations and goals and yet was simultaneously encouraging, understanding, and supportive. I found a kindred spirit, a like- mind, in Debra and will miss her every day. I take comfort in that I can always return to my memories of our meetings, of her words and advice.
My heartfelt condolences to all who were fortunate to know this extraordinary lady.

We are at a loss for words in Brock University’s Faculty of Education. Deb’s sudden and unexpected passing has reminded me once again of how fragile life truly is. Debra made huge contributions to Arts education, not only in Niagara, but nationally, and internationally. She was a friend and colleague to many, including me. She was part of the team who interviewed me for my role as a professor at Brock. Drama education was her refined craft and music brought joy to her soul. She was a fantastic story teller and she and Bill knew how to throw a great party. She loved to laugh! Time and time again, they opened their home up to many. I will always treasure the memory of Deb playing the piano at my house a few months ago, prepping for an upcoming recital. Play on, dear Deb. May your soul rest in peace. My love and prayers extend to your family, friends, colleagues, and students. Your absence leaves a huge emptiness on our Arts Team and in my heart.

Debra and I are Cousins and we had a very special bond all throughout our lives. We are two weeks apart in age and we loved and cherished each other since the very beginning of our life journey.
When I think of her, I think of many good things - but mostly the word "Success" comes to mind. So, this is my tribute to an outstanding woman whose life was an inspiration to many. It was written in 1904 by Bessie Anderson Stanley.
Success is:
"He/she has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much;
who has enjoyed the trust of pure women;the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children; who has filled his/her niche and accomplished the task; who has left the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem or a rescued soul; who has never lacked appreciation of Earth's beauty or failed to express it; who has always looked for the best in others and given them the best he/she had; whose life was an inspiration; whose memory a benediction."
Rest in peace dear Deb....I love you.
And, to Bill, Derek, Lauren, Cameron and Maggie and Peter - our family sends sincere condolences to all of you at this very sad time.

When I retired last June, Debra honoured me with a lovely speech filled with generous comments and anecdotes of experiences we shared at Brock that I had forgotten about. Her generous hospitality in her home along with Bill and yearly invitations to her Christmas Eve parties attest to her kindness and energizing spirit.
