Hi Richard,
Please accept my condolences on the passing of your wife, Phyllis, I remember as a wonderful person, We met at a Humber Summer Workshop, which you really didn't want to attend, as you are a very private person... Anyway, you were a great
mentor & I completed my novel "Lost Souls", & I'm forever grateful...
I know how painful the death of a loved one can be, as my husband, Basil, committed suicide in July 2011 & I'm still recovering... Also, I remember, you & Phyllis were strolling along Castle Frank Road one day when I came out of my driveway on my bicycle & you both welcomed me with open arms. Do you remember that day? Life is beautiful, but sad, n'est-ce pas?? Would love to hear from you
All the best,
Carol Lawlor.

Phyllis, I know you have only been a part of my life for the last 18 years, however, those have been the best years of my life. You and Richard (dad) allowed me into your family with open arms. You shared the most beautiful place with me and my children ,...Gaspe, where Millie took her first steps.
Than many years later I legally became part of the Wright family. I couldn't be more proud to be apart of such a loving, devoted, strong, close knit family!
You taught me that I can do anything that I put my mind to, whether it was school, cooking or even being a mom. You give me strength to carry on. And for that I will miss you deeply mom.
Love you forever,
Wendy

Our deepest sympathies are with the Wright family at this time.
As a professional colleagues, we at The Cooke Agency always thought of Richard and Phyllis in tandem. Phyllis was an incalculable support to Richard and an indispensable contributor to his work, his career, and his success as writer. We cannot know how deeply she will be missed by Richard and her family, but we do know how much we will miss her, not only as a publishing colleague, but as a warm delightful friend.
I remember her joy at telling me at the Giller gala where Richard had just won the big prize that he would also be awarded the Governor General's Award for Fiction in just a few weeks. There could not have been a prouder person on the planet that night than she, and I will always recall that moment as one of the fondest in my publishing career.

For her friends, Phyllis's fiercely loving devotion to her family was a gift. She warmly shared her grounded sense of what matters most in life, and very quietly she gave her strength to us. Phyllis will not be forgotten.

My condolences to Phyllis's family.
She was a wonderfully beneficial presence in the Library in those good days at Brock when printed paper books and journals were still the way and, before Google, speaking to a librarian face to face was the norm for researching profs. I am grateful for all those years of speaking to Phyllis face to face.
She freely gave us all so much happiness.

Dear Richard and Family,
Jane and I were saddened to read of Phyllis's death. You have our sympathy, especially at this time when her recent loss must seem a very raw wound.
On the other hand, you have 51 years to look back on, with affection and pride. I hope that happy memories from those years will continue to surprise and delight you long into the future.
I know that I was always pleased to run into both of you at literary events down through the years (and to recall that all three of us shared happy memories of our times at MacMillan).
Our most recent encounter was at Harbourfront in September a year ago, and I recall thinking how Phyllis could be counted on to be there supporting you. I'm glad that the fine obituary in The Globe mentioned that she "travelled extensively with Richard". We are doing the same thing together, and building up happy shared memories. We are thinking of you now. Doug

It was with surprise and shock that I learned recently that Phyllis was very ill and in hospital. It was a greater shock to read that she had passed so soon thereafter.
I offer my heartfelt sympathy to Richard and his family on the untimely passing of their dear wife, mother, and grandmother.
Phyllis and I were colleagues at Brock University, she in the Gibson Library and I in Germanic & Slavic Studies. My first impression of Phyllis was one of refined and understated elegance that was underscored by her focus and genuine interest in whatever question I might have of her. But I must say that her smile was one of the sunniest, most engaging expressions I have ever experienced! One simply could not help but to smile as well.
I shall remember her humanity, her caring and helpfulness that she expressed through that smile.
Barry W. K. Joe
