A fond farewell to Richard, our beloved author and good friend whose wonderful gift of storytelling will long be remembered. The staff at Simon & Schuster will miss working with
him but treasure the two books - A Life with Words and Nightfall - that we were privileged to publish.
We send our condolences to the family and hope that they take comfort in his legacy of brilliant writing. He was one of Canada's great writers.

A dear friend and former colleague Richard will always be part of my life. As a teacher, reader and writer I am grateful for his wisdom, kindness and humour. His impact on my daughter, Catherine, over the years has been great (dare I say life-changing) and she will never forget that. So glad she was able to have lunch with him shortly before he died.
Thoughts with Andrew and Chris and their families who have suffered the loss of both parents in a short span. I hope that as time goes on the grief will give some ground to happy memories and gratitude for times spent together.
All life is a gift. Richard's and Phyllis's were gifts to all who knew them.

We were saddened to hear of the loss of your father. Our mother Jean White (Fordyce) was a first cousin, our grandmother Etta being brother to your grandfather. We followed his success in writing with great interest and took pride in his achievements. My mother and I had an opportunity to meet up at a book reading in London , Ontario a few years ago when "October" was published. I found him very warm and charming. Please accept our condolences on your loss.

Sorry to learn of Richard's passing. I was a classmate through three years of RTA programme at Ryerson with him and noted then that he was a deep thinker. What an accomplished life he led. My thoughts and prayers are with family and friends.
regards,
Michael Du Boulay

To know "mud" was so special to me. He was the perfect combination of intellect, humour, sensitivity and humility. I'll miss seeing him on his walks around the city.
Our good fortune is he will live forever through his writing. A truly wonderful man !

What a tremendous loss. A kind, gentle soul with huge talent as an author and also as a teacher who inspired hundreds of students at Ridley College over many decades. So sorry for Chris, Andrew and their families.
