Dear Julia, Corina, Michela, and Francesca,
We are all so shocked and sorry to hear about Mike's illness and his passing away this year. I know the pain must be at times unbearable to lose such a wonderful husband and father, so full of life, laughter, caring and curiosity. He was such a fun person to be around. The only consolation is that at least we knew him, and that after his illness, his suffering is finally done. I know that there is so little we can do to help with this very sad time, but I know how strong you all are, and I pray that you soon find peace. If we can help in any way, please let us know. All of our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Frank, Amy, Mary, Michelle and Joe

The first memory I have of Mike we are standing, facing each other at close quarters, fists raised in the St. Joseph’s playground, each of us telling the other we aren’t afraid of the other. Some 44 years later, I have no recollection at all what this was about. The next thing I recall, there is a blinding flash of lightning, followed by the loudest thunder I have ever heard and all the kids pour into the school in a panic: fight averted.
Looking back now, it’s easy to believe that God himself was intervening that day. For the next 12 years or so, Mike and I were so close, I think a lot of people confused us. We were both the atypical light haired, light skinned Facer street wops who were both good at maths and sciences, played soccer, or football or chess at recess. It’s quite possible that I’m just flattering myself - Mike was just great at everything: from his amazing musicianship, to his artistic flair, to his baseball fielding, to his chess playing, Mike was without equal.
All of which makes his other outstanding quality so touching: his profound humility and kindness to others. Mike made a point in high school of speaking in the most humble Facer street way - he never spoke down to anyone - he was famous for it! A couple of years ago - when I first learned about Mike’s illness, I ran into an old friend of ours who had also heard about it. He told me about how Mike had spent hours with him in high school helping him with Math…how Mike had gotten him through that. I didn’t know that - typically Mike’s good works were not to be bragged about.
I have been thinking about Mike a lot the past few days. I have been thinking about his family: dear Frank and Giuseppina and Joseph who were almost like a second family to me in those long ago days. Thinking about his new family who, to my great regret, I didn’t get to know: Julia, Corina, Francesca, and Michela. I am imagining your terrible grief at the loss of someone as truly great as Mike was. To you, I can only offer my own grief and condolences. I’ll try to remind you, as I am reminding myself, how blessed we were to even have had someone like Mike in our lives for far too short a time.
Mike was and will always remain for me, my Facer street brother. He was like no other: bless you Michele, and thank you for everything.

Our special condolences go out to Michael's mother and father who were the best neighbours one could ask for while growing up next door on Highfield. God bless you all and rest in peace Michael.

We are so blessed to have Mike become part of our lives as we raised our children together. We so enjoyed being neighbours and seeing first-hand the pride and joy he took in building your home - a home full of love with a door that was always open. Mike was so brave throughout the past nearly 3 years since his diagnosis and fought so hard to be with all his girls. We know how extremely proud you all are of him. He now lives on in his three beautiful daughters whom he loved with all his heart. We are here for each of you always and know you will continue to take good care of each other.
All our love.....Lynsey, Dave, Brennan, Bryer and Belle
