I'm so sorry to hear of Shaun's passing. We were classmates in the BFA New Media program at the University of Lethbridge & he was such an amazingly talented person. I always admired his work in our classes & knew he would go far with his skills & creativity. One piece in particular that he created has stood out in my mind all through the years. It said "Do not defy your nature. It will not escape you". It truly impacted me & that's why I still remember it. My condolences to Shaun's family & friends. May time heal your heart & please be comforted that he is in a better place now.

Spent time today saying goodbye to Shaun in the company of the great many family and friends that loved him. I "inherited" Shaun in a standing art department where I was the newcomer. I was immediately impressed by his talents and his sense of humour. He was also one of those guys who travelled a great distance to work everyday without complaint or ever needing to be excused. Shaun was a solid guy and I was glad to know and be working with him.Not very long after we began he and his wife Jacqui were faced with what I can only image as one of the greatest challenges for a couple. When tragedy strikes others you are given a glimpse of a side of their character you may otherwise never see. Shaun exhibited to me all the qualities I would hope to come out in myself under those circumstances. Clearly, Jacqui came first. His ability to work through that time with her and return to work was as a testament to their strength as a couple. It was clear that Shaun was part of a special partnership. That was my first impression of Shaun and also from a distance, my first of Jacqui. Today I met Jacqui at what again I can only image as one of the most difficult times anyone could ever face. If I was better on my feet with words I would have told her how profoundly moved I am by her resilience. Shaun and Jacqui together must have been a force of nature. I want to thank you Jacqui for today calling upon that strength to share Shaun's message with us. Your ripples have made an impact.

Shaun and I first met while studying film at Sheridan College. His passion and love of cinema was apparent in every medium he so beautifully expressed himself through. Whether it was words on a page, traditional sketches or digital art Shaun's personal touch was instantly recognizable. He taught me that working hard does in fact pay off and that being true to what you believe in is the most powerful way to express yourself. I was happy to continue working with Shaun on several passion projects after school including Waterpark, Silvercreek Towers, Mangods, The Good, Bad and Something Worse and LIFT. No dream was ever too big as long as we kept at it. Outside of our own films we shared a love for Game of Thrones, getting together to watch iconic episodes and strategizing over the gruellingly long board game with our spouses and Spencer and Vana. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten Shaun. Thank you for all the wisdom and good times.

So sad to hear about Shaun's passing. I worked with Shaun on my first ever show with the DGC over 5 years ago. I was so intimidated by his incredible skills as an illustrator at first, but he was so approachable that he made me feel comfortable right away. He took the time to show me a lot of tips and tricks on Photoshop, and he shared with me his process as an illustrator. He really didn't have to go out of his way to do that, but it really meant a lot to me as someone who was starting out in the business back then. I also adored his sharp wit and his nerdy love for comic book heroes.
Sending much love to Shaun's family during this difficult time.

They say that people come into your life for a reason, for a season or for a lifetime. I was shocked and heartbroken to hear the sad news about Shaun.
Shaun and I met in University back in 2000 (has it really been 17 years??). I was a small-town girl fresh out of high school that thought I had some art skills. Day 1, I met Shaun, and was immediately fed a big old piece of humble pie. To say he was exceptionally talented would be an understatement. He was that guy that often had the best project to share (I'm sure my former classmates would agree). He was an incredible artist, animator, sculptor and director. Basically, whatever you put in front of him, he was the best at it. He was quiet, but so funny once you got to know him. Over the course of those four years to get our BFA, we became good friends.
After graduation, I was struggling to land my first job. Shaun was already working in Vancouver, and helped hook me up with my first job at Mainframe (now Rainmaker). He let me crash in his tiny 2 bedroom garden level suite in Kerrisdale until I got my bearings. I drove everything out from Alberta in my little VW Golf (not much!). He was the only person I knew in Vancouver. Had it not been for him, I would not have met my husband Ryan or any of my friends out here. I owe him so much for that alone.
Living together in tight quarters, we were literally together 24/7 for at least 3-4 months (home, work, gym, laundromat and home again) until I found my first apartment. So, we had a lot of time to talk about our dreams out of school, and his were huge. I admired that about him, he was never afraid to set the bar high. He was always writing scripts, drawing or taking photos in his spare time. We often talked about the joys and pains of growing up in a small town (Coaldale vs. Picture Butte).
Over the years, we grew further apart, we moved to different studios, different provinces, but still kept in touch a few times a year. I had the opportunity and privilege to meet his wife Jacqui several years ago. Then Julia arrived, and this tough-guy Shaun I had always known was suddenly posting beautiful baby-pictures all the time which made me smile. He spoke of you both so fondly.
Shaun, you will be so dearly missed. Looking back, you were one of those people that played a pivotal role in my life, and for that I will be eternally grateful. I only wish now that I could have told you so.
Let us never forget that life is short and precious thing. Rest in peace dear friend.

Shaun was a talented and hardworking member of the Director's Guiild of Canada and Toronto's vibrant film community. I am grateful for his beautiful illustrations, creativity, and easy going nature. He had a wry wit, an easy smile, and a wonderfully collaborative attitude. Shaun will be greatly missed by all of us in the Toronto film community who had the good fortune to cross paths with him. To Jacqui, little Julia and all Shaun's family and friends, I send my heartfelt condolences.

My condolences to you and your families.
I worked with Shaun not too long ago at Acme Pictures. We become good friends over a short period of time.
Thats the type of person Shaun was. He was polite to his peers, kind to strangers, and respectful to everyone.
It was a pleasure to know such a kind hearted person. Thanks for the memories, Shaun.
You will be missed.

I was very sad to hear of the passing of my friend, Mr. Shaun M Martens.
We met at Sheridan College in 2008 and bonded instantly over James Cameron's Terminator films. He and I often shared a similar sense of humor and an interest in the Art side of filmmaking.
We worked together both for fun and professionally throughout the years following school, although I'm sorry to say we hadn't seen each other much as of late.
One of the most enjoyable projects we did together was a silly 48-hour Western film that he and I co-wrote together. In it, he played a formidable Bounty Hunter searching for a Legendary gunslinger, while I played a dim-witted Cowboy who he probed for information. Our combined sense of humor, ideas and wit rewarded us with "Best Writing" in the awards given for the project.
My heart goes out to Jacqui Christine, their beautiful daughter Julia, and to his family and friends. He is someone I always figured I'd see around.

I was very saddened by the news of Shaun's passing. I was the program technologist for the Advanced TV & Film program while Shaun was a student here at Sheridan College. I have great memories of Shaun - he was very talented. We still have one of his pencil sketches framed at the front of the office here. My condolences to his family during this difficult time.

We remember Shaun as an outstanding graduate student at Sheridan, a very popular, talented and creative guy who was not afraid to voice his views on what he believed right or wrong with the world. That is the formula for a great film maker and more importantly, a great human being. Shaun had much to offer.
Cancer is such a curse taking the best of our family and friends away far too early.
On behalf of my Sheridan colleagues, please accept our sincere condolences for your immeasurable loss.

I am deeply shocked and shaken by the sad demise of Shaun. We were together in 2008-09 doing our filmmaking program at Sheridan College. Shaun was a true gentleman, a dedicated, hardworking, art loving person having big dreams in his eyes for his future. I have no words to express his loss. We will surely miss the presence of a truly loveable and kind friend like Shaun. May God places the departed soul in heavens and gives enough courage to his family to bear this huge loss.
