Obituary of James Buchanan McMahon

James Buchanan “Jimmy” McMahon McMahon, James Buchanan passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on Wednesday, April 5 at the St. Catharines Hospital at the age of 94. Jim was pre-deceased by his beloved wife of 67 years, Mary, in 2013 and his youngest son, Tom, in 2014. Jim is survived by his sons Wayne (Kathryn), Jim (Barbara), Bob (Pam); his daughters, Patti Booth (Julian) and Donna Snider (Barry) and his daughter-in-law, Karen McMahon. Jim was the dear Grandpa to 17 grandchildren – David McMahon (Raja), Karen McMahon, Bruce McMahon (Rachel), Jim McMahon (Erin), Mary-Ellen McMahon, Jodi McMahon (Michael), Erin Taubeneck (Thies), Rob McMahon (Kelly), Becky McMahon (Dan), Lori Stockman (Kevin), Alyson Campeau (George), Carly Snider (Brandon), Jenny Snider (Paul), Kimmi Snider and Dylan, Jessica and Conner McMahon. 13 great- grandchildren also survive – Chase McMahon, Ella and Jenna McMahon, Madelynne and Callum McMahon, Lauryn New, Matthew, Hailey and Aliana Taubeneck, Braeden and Griffin Stockman and Taylor and Samantha Campeau. Jim was an employee of TRW for over 35 years retiring in 1987 and was a member of the TP Old Guard. In his younger days, Jim was an outstanding lacrosse player with the St. Catharines Athletics and is enshrined in the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame, the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame and the St. Catharines Sports Hall of Fame. He was particularly proud of being the last surviving member of the Athletics 1946 Mann Cup Canadian champions. After his lacrosse playing days were over, Jim devoted many years to coaching, managing and refereeing in both lacrosse and hockey. An avid sports fan throughout his life, Jim was well known for his encyclopedia-like knowledge of all sports. A former Montreal Maroons fan, he was still following and reciting the statistics of the Toronto Blue Jays, the Niagara Ice Dogs, the Thorold PeeWees and even the Toronto Maple Leafs until a few days before his passing. Our father, grandfather and great-grandfather was a good man who greatly enjoyed his role as family patriarch. He was loved and respected by all members of the family and will be greatly missed. To paraphrase an expression of Jim's, “ He had a good run.” The family wish to thank the staff of the Royal Henley Retirement Home for their kindnesses and care for Jim during his time there since 2013. Also, thanks to Dr. D. Ananthan and the nursing staff of Ward 3A at the St. Catharines Hospital for their compassionate, professional care during Jim's last days. If so desired, donations to the The Kidney Foundation of Canada or the Steve Ludzik Centre for Parkinson's Rehab would be appreciated by the family. Visitation will be held at the George Darte Funeral Home on Carlton St. at noon on Sunday, April 9 followed by a celebration of life service at 1:00 p.m.
