Oh Sandy, my dear wonderful friend. It is almost unbelievable that it has been a year since you have left this world. I am only now recovering from the first shock of your passing. I am recovering but I will never be the same. Life will never be the same without you over there in Toronto/St Catharines...just a phone call away. I found a way to keep you with me a little bit longer. I rescued a little kitten last summer and I named her 'Potsie'. She ofter reminds me of you because, just like you, she has such a beautful energy, she likes to 'mix' it up with the big dogs from time to time and she is a true survivor. I am getting to a place where I can accept that you are no longer in this world but it hasn't been an easy journey. So, until we meet again my amazing friend.....good bye.

In still deep sorrow i think about Sandy and about our common time. It was a present in my life to be Sandy's friend and spend time together. Unforgetten will be her charism, character, sence of humour ... Everything. It is still hard to accept that she had to leave us. And that it is now One Year ago. I often think that she wanted to think about her everytime we'll see the red bird. Unfortunatelly this bird lives not in Bavaria. But nevertheless it is for me a symbol that she and her spirit is still among us. With this imagination ist is a big help to be with her. So all my thoughts are with her friends and especially with her family.

I met Sandy through university basketball. I played at U of T back in the day. I also saw Sandy play with UVic for the CIAU title. She had that long braid and big smile. She played with a zest and joy that was memorable. Later, we played against each other in the senior women's loop. She was always friendly, always kind, with that enduring enjoyment of the game. I was just so sorry to hear about Sandy. We were born one day apart and our mother's were in the hospital together. A long family friendship began and just a couple years ago we reminisced about a joint birthday party we shared as kids. Her memory of the event was impeccable and although more than a few years (!) had passed she was the same person she was then. Completely authentic with a sparkle in her eye. My deepest sympathy to all of her family and friends and especially her Mom. You are all in our prayers.

In this sad time I can still muster a smile when I think of how devoted Sandy was to all the †œimportant† people in her life. Clarifying this statement with the word †œimportant† for some people would really narrow the list. However in Sandy's case, the number of people she touched in her life was so huge, the list of important people is equally as large. I consider myself fortunate to be one of the people she touched and for this large list of people, she will be sorely missed but not forgotten.
I first met Sandy in her first year of coaching at Ryerson, we were both watching games at OFSAA †" we joked that we were the only two coaches who seemed to be in attendance at all the games. It was at that point I recognized her complete commitment to coaching.
As I came to know her better over the years I realized, that 100% commitment applied to all of her life †" family, coaching, friends, job, or simply listening to a person speak in a quiet or not so quiet conversation. I admired her commitment and thought it would be great to coach with her some day. Some day arrived and we coached together at Ryerson for 7 years and for 5 years in Canada Basketball's Centre for Performance program. In those years I experienced first hand: her meticulous organization and preparation her passion and intensity for the game; and most importantly her passion for helping others and her fierce commitment to her players, friends and most of all - family.
My most heartfelt sympathies and prayers go out to Sandy's mother Theresa, her partner Mary, her brothers & sister and families. My thoughts and prayers are also with the large group of friends who were her main support group during her courageous 2 year battle.

I remember Sandy as vibrant, agressive, bright and inquisitive. She had a sharp wit and wickedly wonderful smile. Her beautiful face was always full of life. She made me laugh even when she was poking fun at me...which she often did :-) She started out our friendship by kicking my chair at Queen Mary, we moved on to playing sports together, to singing in the Sound of Music where she was Baroness Elsa, to high school at Collegiate where she set me straight on what was real or not. I loved to watch her play basketball - she was an artist on the court. I lost touch after high school - my loss - and life went on its way. I had a chance to reconnect last year and I didn't - my loss again. Non the less, I love her and always will. Mrs. P. I'm so sorry for your loss...you have always been an amazing woman and Sandy certainly had much of you in her. Kelly

Dear All in St. Catherine's,
Sending light and prayers from the West Coast. She was an amazing light herself. I wanted to come out from Vancouver for the service, but it won't work out. I have fond travelling memories of Sandy in Sorrento in 2006, and often meeting her with Jennifer. I think especially today of Easter weekend 2011 at Jennifer's, and at your mom's for the big celebratory Easter dinner, when we watched Sondheim's birthday party after dinner on the big screen tv - Sandy having more musical comments then her mom! And then Sandy came out to Vancouver this July and came over to my condo for dinner when Jennifer was here. I want to think she felt so comfortable and at home, that is why she fell asleep and slept over.
I will miss her strong spirit.

Sandy taught us so much. She was inspirational as a player, as her work ethic was large. As a coach, she was respected by all, she lead by example; having ethical and social morals that would help guide the young women she coached. As a friend she was brave and strong.
She has been in my prayers and will continue to be, along with the family.

I wish to express my deepest condolences to Sandy's family, immediate and extended. What a life lesson we can take away from her fighting spirit. The amazing support shown by her family really defines what family is.

This weekend has not been a happy one for me as I learned of Sandy's passing. My condolences and well wishes go out to her devoted mother Theresa, her extremely loyal partner Mary, her loving brothers & sister and her many faithful nieces and nephews. Sandy had a huge support group over the last couple of years and I tip my hat to all of those who helped in her courageous battle.
Without a doubt Sandy was a fighter, maintaining that stance right to the very end. It was a stance that allowed all of us to enjoy her physical presence and spirit well beyond the time the medical profession gave to her. Along with one of her former star players, Miruna Muller, I went down the QEW to visit with Sandy at the end of October. She told us about her recent trip with friends to Machu Picchu in Peru. The bus took everybody to the mountaintop residential area of the ancient Inca religious retreat, but to get to the highest point of the sacred location required a rather strenuous hike over rugged terrain. After all her friends had gone off on the hike Sandy said, "I'm not going to let this C thing get the best of me, I'm going up that hill also". And away she went on her own. You can imagine the surprise on her friend's faces when she showed up at the top. That was the fighting spirit Sandy imbued in her life over and over again. All of us that knew her well loved that spirit in her and she and it will be missed.
For 10 seasons from 1994-95 to 2003-04 I was Sandy's assistant coach with the Ryerson Rams Women's Basketball Team. We certainly had our share of adventures as we guided the young women through a very competitive sports environment before releasing them into the real world. I think we did a good job as most have turned their lives into success stories worthy of the many hours we spent in gyms, buses and hotels molding those lives Sandy was dedicated to her team and the players on it. There was never any prejudice in Sandy's mind for a players background. She wanted the best out of her players and she went full out to get the highest level attainable from every player. Some might not have liked that approach, but they all became stronger people through it.
Personally, I will miss Sandy and I look back fondly on the years we spent together trying to put in place a championship team. I know that those she touched in basketball around the world and especially in Canada will miss her drive, energy and tenacity. She has left her mark on this planet and will be remembered long after this sad occasion.
I know Sandy is waiting to meet us all again in the heavens above. She is especially waiting for a couple of referees who would probably be better off going to the real purgatory than face what Sandy has waiting for them.
