I was saddened to read about Dr.Orr in the papers today. But I was glad to see his smiling face in that great photograph!
The first outdoor rink I skated on was frozen on the front yard of the Orr home on Riverdale.
Dr. Orr used to drive Bobby and me to Ridley College and pick us up when it was his rotation. Like others, my family was part of that great medical community in St. Catharines that seems so different from any medical community nowadays. All for one and one for all.
I had seen Dr. Orr several times since those Ridley days so long ago, it was always my pleasure.

In 1950, our family moved to St Catharines. The Orr family arrived in 1952.
David Playfair and Bill Orr had common back grounds. Both were esteemed medical specialists, both had served with distinction in the Canadian Medical Corps during WW 2, each had great respect for the other, and they became firm friends. Both had senior leadership roles at the two hospitals.
Our families went back and forth often over the years.
As a kid, I remember Bill as a quiet, kind, and very deep person. He was easy to like and admire and I did.
One winter, my skull was slashed by a hockey puck. I thought my father would deal with it, but this would have violated his professional ethics...my father also believed Dr. Orr was the best surgeon there was anywhere. Accordingly, my father took me to the Hotel Dieu that evening where Dr. Orr installed 12 stitches in a kindly manner.
This cemented my liking and respect for the man.
Affectionately,
John Playfair

As a nursing student at the General in the early sixties, I was privileged to scrub for many of Dr. Orr's surgeries. Students were pretty low in the medical hierarchy, but W.J. Orr- the epitome of a gentleman- made a nervous student feel like she was the best scrub nurse he ever had. Patient, kind, compassionate. He was the best. He will be missed.

I was sad to read today about the passing of Dr. Orr. Sorry for your loss. The cottage on Lake of Bays was built by my grandparents Archie and Jay Ballard. They had the Log Cabin built from pine logs on the property. My grandmother always spoke about watching how the Craftsman with only an axe head, would notch and shave each log. He would test the tight fit of the log notches with a piece of paper as a feeler gauge. I was about 4 years old when it was sold to Dr. Orr. I believe it was around 1969 or 1970. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Orr and his wife back in 2001 while I was looking for the old family Cottage. They graciously invited myself and my kids in for a cup of tea. The place had not change from the pictures we have. The Lincoln Logs sitting on the coffee table I believe we're the same ones I played with as a little kid. It was an amazing step back in time for me. It is a fond memory for me meeting them and have them open their Cottage to my kids and I. We had a great conversation over tea. It was a good day.

We give thanks for the life and legacy of Dr. Orr. It was an honour to meet him, and we deeply appreciate his commitment to children through Niagara Children's Centre. We too have been blessed by his determination and compassion, as we have been a part of Niagara Children's Centre family with our two youngest daughters, Rachel and Janneke. Wishing the extended family strength for the coming days; may the many memories both held privately by family and shared publicly in the coming days by friends provide comfort and encouragement.
