SULLIVAN, Irene Joan
Irene Joan Sullivan (nee Short) passed away peacefully at Tabor Manor, St. Catharines on May 8, 2018 in her 95th year. Irene was predeceased by her husband John (1993), her son Brian (1998) and her sister Greta Rennie (2017). Loving mother of Michael Sullivan (Linda), Terry Sullivan (Carrol) and the late Brian Sullivan (Peggy). Proud grandmother to Kathy Hoffman (Mark), Janet Rose (Dave),Tim Sullivan (Jen), Donna May (Steve), Kristen Sullivan (Kyle), Kevin Sullivan and Leigh Ann Sullivan. Survived by many great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
Irene was born in Weymouth England in 1924 and during World War II she served with Great Britain's Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) as a meteorologist. She met and married her husband John Sullivan who was serving with the Canadian Armed Forces. Irene arrived in Canada as a War Bride in 1946, and belonged to the local War Brides association and met with them regularly. Irene was proud of her British Heritage but was also a proud Canadian. Irene retired as a clerk from the Canada Revenue Agency and enjoyed many years of retirement.
She was an active member of the Welland Ave. United Church and later the Silver Spire United Church in St. Catharines. The Church was very important to her.
Irene led a very active and long life whose hobbies included painting, sewing, knitting, reading and especially travelling. She travelled throughout Europe, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii with her husband John and in later years all over southern Ontario with the Dunlop Seniors. Irene also had fond memories of many happy times with the Valleyview Road gang. Over the years Irene received help from many individuals and the family would like to thank Dr. Waler, Dr. Dickson, the CCAC, Linhaven Day and Stay, and also the wonderful and caring staff at Tabor Manor, including Dr. Greenlaw.
Cremation has taken place. Family and friends will be received at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines on Saturday, May 26 from 10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. A memorial service for Irene will follow in the funeral home chapel at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Silver Spire Church or the Charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
