Obituary of John (Bill) William Handley
HANDLEY, John William (Bill, Bunky) Nov. 16, 1936 - June 18, 2018. On a beautiful summer morning, Bill passed away surrounded by those he loved in his St Catharines home. Survived by loving wife Carol, children, Cheryl (Randy) Nunn, Colleen (Porky) Robinson, Carrie (Jeff) Hendrikse and Bill (Debbie) Handley. Grandfather to Jordan (Meghan), Jared (Lindsay), Jesse (Nick), Caitlyn (Blake), Ciara (Connor), Liam, Nate, Kassie (Justin), Sierra (Zach) and Will. Great grandfather to Nolan. Brother to Sheila (the late Bob) Allan and Blair (Cindy) Handley. Bill is predeceased by parents William and Julia, and sister Elaine. Best friend of the late Pete Secord and the late Bob "Boogie" Bishop and "Dapper" Dan Taylor. A heartfelt thanks to our dearest friends, Joe and Ruth MacNeil for all of your support over the years. Bill was born in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton and came to St Catharines in 1948 with his family and settled in Western Hill. Bill was a vibrant athlete in his teenage years. Dad loved his hockey both on and off the ice. He played for the Teepee Bisons and was a member of the 1954-1955 Juvenile OMHA Champions. A lifelong card carrying Toronto Maple Leafs fan, Bill dreamed of seeing the Leafs hoist the Stanley Cup one more time, however maybe now he has some pull with the Big Guy to get that Cup for his beloved Leafs! Bill could always be found with a dish cloth in his hand, cleaning up after everyone as he went. He took great pride and care in his home and his garden. Most of all he took great care of his family. Together for 60 years, Bill and Carol were the epitome of true love and devotion. Bunky will be greatly missed by all. Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Matthew Pendanathu this Thursday, June 21st at 11a.m., St Mary's of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, 169 St Paul Cr. in St Catharines.Cremation to follow. Luncheon to follow in the church hall by the B&C Association. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill's name to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region, Hospice Niagara or the Brain Tumour Foundation.
