Obituary of Zygmunt Wojtas
WOJTAS, Zygmunt
Passed away with his loving family by his side on Monday, June 18th, 2018 at the United Mennonite Home at the age of 94. Beloved husband of the late Jadwiga (2017). Cherished father of Charles (Barbara), Valerie (Tony) Merlo and Christopher. He is predeceased by his daughter Basia (1985). Deeply loved Dziadziu of Robert, Justin (Patricia), Adam, Krystyna and Christian. Brother in law of Elizabeth and Joseph Zabek and Arlene Konopka. Uncle Ziggy will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews.
Zygmunt ‘Ziggy’ Wojtas was born on August 13, 1923 in Sitowicze Poland. He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather.and truly was a jack of all trades who managed to be loved by everyone he interacted with. Ziggy was a proud veteran of World War II and a Past President of The Royal Canadian Legion - Branch 418. As a proud veteran of the Polish Corps under General Anders, Ziggy always shared his stories of trials and tribulations during the second world war with everyone in the family. After the war Ziggy came to Canada because he cherished the freedom that he was denied when Poland fell under the Communist regime. He met his beloved wife Yadwiga in St. Catharines and together they worked very hard to build a wonderful life for their family.
Ziggy loved to laugh, watch hockey and spend time outdoors - especially at the family cottage in Bobcaygeon, Ontario. Fishing was his favourite hobby and Ziggy was adept at catching a trophy fish for many friends and family. Ziggy was sometimes a man of few words, but was always very thoughtful in his remarks. He had many values and morals, but in particular he would recall a saying he heard during his time in the army: ‘To be victorious and rest on one's laurels, is defeat; but to be defeated and not submit, is victory.” Though he will be missed by many, he will now be reunited with his beloved wife, Yadwiga, and watch over us from above. A true soldier and a gentleman right to the very end, may he rest in peace.
A sincere thank you to Dr. Woodland for his compassionate care and to all of the wonderful staff at Orchard View Apartments and UMH for their dedication and kindness. The family will receive visitors at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton Street, St. Catharines on Thursday, June 21 from 2-4 p.m. & 7-9 p.m. Vigil Prayers will take place on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Perpetual Church, on Friday, June 22nd at 10 a.m. Burial at Victoria Lawn Cemetery to follow.
