Obituary of Steven Kornecky

Kornecky, Steven - Passed away peacefully with his family by his side on January 9th, 2012 at the age of 89. Loving father of Mark (Kathy) of St. Catharines, Holly (Craig) McFarlane of Peterborough, and Lisa (Greg) of Bancroft. Dear dido of Lasha (Phil), Bradley and Lindsay. Steven will be fondly remembered by his extended family in Ukraine. Steven was born in Chulowyczi, Ukraine. He served in the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and was incarcerated in concentration camps Gross Rosen, Sachsenhausen and Buchenwald until the end of the Second World War. Steven came to Canada in 1947, settling in Timmins where he owned and operated a men†™s wear store. Later settling in St. Catharines, Steven raised his children while working at Eaton†™s for 30 years and teaching Ukrainian School for over 40 years. Member of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ukrainian Black Sea Hall, The League of Ukrainian Canadians, World League of Ukrainian Political Prisoners, and past Director of Ukrainian (St. Catharines) Credit Union Ltd. He was also a member of the Ukrainian Youth organization- CYM. Steven spent his retirement writing, publishing a biographical novel, a reference book for Ukrainian school and community, a book of poetry as well as numerous other poems and stories for friends, colleagues and the community. Family and friends will be received at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 595 Carlton Street on Wednesday January 11, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Panachyda will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated in Sts. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church on Thursday at 10 a.m. followed by Rite of Committal in St Volodymyr Cemetery, Oakville. If so desired, donations made to Sts. Cyril and Methodius Building Fund would be appreciated by his family.
