EULOGY FOR DIANE FOGG
Good Afternoon, I am Stephanie Free; and I’m humbled to be able to say that Diane Fogg has allowed me to call her mom for almost 40 years. Cindy, Brian, and Pamela have given me the honor to pay tribute to this amazing woman. Should I fail my husband Fred is here to take over, a tag team if you will.
This time of year when all the world is preparing to celebrate a miracle birth we are gathered here questioning why God would take our angel on earth? Our loss is unmistakably Heavens gain.
Diane Helen Nevestuk Fogg was a proud daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend, and family matriarch.
Born in Timmins Ontario October 6th 1941, she was the eldest of 10 children, a role she took on seriously. Married the love of her life on March 12th, 1960. She worked on the farms picking fruit, then to the Pillar and Post in Niagara On The Lake, while raising her family and then on to the The Star of the Sea Rectory in Port Delouse.
Working up to age 65. She was a dedicated worker, returning from the lake her last year to complete her time at the rectory instead of simply quitting a month early to continue enjoying the lake. Through the years she saw different Priests come and go, having her favourites, Father Randy for one. Wasn’t she embarrassed when Cindy asked her, with Father Randy present, whether he wore boxers or briefs? Well she gave up no secrets!
She was the most caring person, always thinking of others before herself. Not to say she didn’t indulge herself. She loved fresh bread with butter, or butter with fresh bread. It was not easy to determine which came first. She loved when each week Buddy dropped by with a fresh loaf of bread to visit.
She loved fried onions, pasta, crunchits, chips and sour cream, playing cards and yatzee and yes, the odd rye and coke. Her ever ready stash of fun food was always available and all the kids knew where to find it. She was quick to bring out the crackers, cheese, kubasa and pickles when people came to visit and loved when they did. Her home was always a welcoming place for family and friends to gather. She loved to cook and bake making the best screwie Lewies and perogies, and even forgave Fred when he dipped her perogies in ketchup.
Cindy never ventured out anywhere without Mom in the passenger seat. Always eager to join Cindy whether it was to run out for the latest deals or a Wal-Mart fix.
She loved gingham, eyelet lace, overalls on children and tending to her yard work. She’d say that she would have loved to live back in the days of simpler times somewhere between Little House On The Prairie to the Golden Era of film. Movies like the Quiet Man and Somewhere In Time were two of her many favorites. She cherished her time with her girls watching Anne of Green Gables and the Sound of Music.
Enjoyed watching the Winter Olympics, the bigger the TV to see them on the better.
Christmas was her favourite time of year, with lights and decorations, eggnog and rum, not shaken nor stirred. She watched all the Christmas movies and kept track of the year they were filmed and how often she saw them. She had just been taken to see the festival of lights which was also an annual pleasure, and she never missed ringing in each New Year.
Her family was just as excited as she was to see her experience her first plane trip to revisit Disney World. She proved that there is no age limit to earning your wings! That particular trip she stayed at Animal Kingdom. She came home to share her stories of the animals and the fun she had. Not to forget the tropical storm to complete the adventure.
Within the last year she was so enthusiastic about her Ancestry DNA results and the people it brought into her family with their half brother Edward.
She loved Lake St. Peter. Summer couldn’t come fast enough for her to get back to her second home, her elegant trailer with the view of the lake. Only mom would wear a freshly ironed blouse under a lumberjack coat and look elegant. She could build the best campfires, often tending to it long after all of us had gone to bed. It was her little piece of heaven on earth. I truly think the loons called out to her as much as to each other. She loved the singing around the campfire and laughing with all the antics and stories being told. Fortunately last summer she had many enjoyable days, with swimming and playing Newfie Golf and day trips to shop.
She was never judgmental, never condemning, and always gracious. She disliked confrontation, unfairness and bad four letter words. She sheltered her loved ones from worry when she could and yet worried about everyone.
Her brothers and sisters meant so much to her, each special in their own specific way. Bringing into her life the many nieces and nephews she adored. She had so many friends, all of which she cared for as extended family.
She leaves behind her adored children: Cindy with Ken, Brian (Buddy) with Cathy and Pamela. Her grandchildren: Vanessa with Rich, Dustin, Dylan, Jennifer, Devin with Amanda, and Jonathan, her great grandchildren: Sydney and Winston. They all will miss her immensely, but are stronger and blessed for having her influence in their lives.
Though we feel robbed that God has chosen to take her far too soon, we have to find comfort in that she is reunited with her beloved Brian, her soul mate. Rest in Peace Dear Mom, keep dancing and singing.
