Obituary of Al (George) Tanner
TANNER, George (Al) - Passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, June 12th, 2019 at Hospice Niagara in his 92nd year. Beloved husband of the late Eileen for 61 years. Cherished father of Carol (Mike) Purcer and Kenn Tanner. Loving Poppa of Jessica (Mike) Murphy, Carl Purcer and Natasha Purcer (Jason). Al was the oldest of 16 children. He will be sadly missed by his best friend, Danny MacLean. Al started his career as a Coal Miner in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. He moved to New Toronto in 1956, where he spent 11 years as a Municipal worker and volunteer Firefighter. Al and his family moved to St. Catharines in 1967, where he was employed at Thompson Products until his retirement. He was a committed volunteer and a Lifetime member of the Fire Fighters Assoc. of Ontario, the Royal Canadian Legion and the Canadian Corps, where he served as President for 8 years .Also, Al was a Gunner, 3rd Div. in the Royal Canadian Army, Halifax. A special thank you to the staff and volunteers at Hospice Niagara. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton Street, St. Catharines on Thursday, June 20th from 11a.m.-1p.m. A Celebration of Al's Life will follow at 1p.m. in the funeral home chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Hospice Niagara would be appreciated by the family.
