Obituary of Angelina Valle Gonzales

VALLE GONZALES, Angelina

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear Mother on August 18, 2019 at the age of 85.  She leaves behind her children Martha (Robert) and Eduardo (Aleaha).  She will be dearly missed by her family and extended family and friends in Cuba, Canada, and the USA.

Angelina was in many ways a self-made woman.  Growing up in the Cuban countryside, she had little chance for formal education and taught herself to read and write while caring for her brothers and sisters and working to support her family.  She worked hard to ensure that her own children received the best education possible and encouraged them to strive for excellence in their chosen fields.  (She was later able to complete grade 11).  Her late husband would often refer to her as a magician because her inventive and entrepreneurial spirit made sure that her family always had an ample, balanced and nutritious diet at a time when it was often difficult to guarantee proper nutrition.  Angelina had a great love for children and cared for them as a nanny in Cuba and was affectionately known in her neighbourhood as “Tata” – i.e. “Nanny”.

Angelina was a woman of strong faith and believed in the resurrection.  We share in this belief, knowing in our hearts that “Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life.”  (Eastern Christian paschal hymn.)

Visitation will take place at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 from 5-7 p.m. and Thursday, August 22, 2019 from 9-11 a.m.  Funeral Mass will be held at St. Alfred Roman Catholic Church at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday August 22, 2019.  Rite of Committal will follow mass at Victoria Lawn Cemetery, Queenston St., St. Catharines.  Memorial donations may be made to Operation Smile Canada.

El velorio tendrá lugar el Miércoles, 21 de Agosto (5-7 p.m.) y el Jueves, 22 de Agosto (9-11 a.m.), en la George Darte Funeral Home, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines. La misa de funeral será celebrada en St. Alfred Catholic Church el Jueves 22 de Agosto a las 11:30 a.m. El entierro se realizará inmediatamente después de la misa, en el Victoria Lawn Cemetery, en Queenston St., St. Catharines. Donaciones a la memoria de Angelina pueden ser ofrecidas en beneficio de Operation Smile Canada, que se ocupa de devolver la sonrisa a niños y niñas nacidos con paladar hendido y/o labio leporino.
