A Letter to My Cousins
December 28, 2010
Dear Michael, Marianne, Susan, Joe, Peter, Matthew and your families,
Today…
…I awake on the morning of your mom†™s visitation and light a candle for your mom. I choose a nice oil lamp with an abstract design of water lilies on a gentle pond…mmmmm nice…but really it is the only lamp that currently has oil to burn!
Today…I†™m looking onto the world, freshly covered by snow.
Calm, peace and a steady quiet we have never known before. A strange, new sensation welcomed by weary souls.
We moved to BC almost a year and a half ago and not with mindless heads. We thought long and hard for three years prior to moving, as we cleaned out closets and those hidden recesses of our homes, as well as our hearts. We knew the day would come when there would be births of grandchildren and funerals of loved ones. How would I handle these life events living miles away?
Well, for your mom, I light a candle. I cry. I reminisce…
Remembering the visits we had as children in your Mississauga home…the seemingly endless drives to the big city. The anxiousness of †˜getting there†™ always resulted in good times…eating great food, playing board games, running around, watching baseball games after dinner. As we grew up there was more chatting, drinking tea and belly-laughing! Then the trip home was over in a flash; thankful parents for sleeping children and a break from the repetitive †œare we there yet?† It†™s not until we become adults that we truly appreciate and value the effort and time it takes to create a nice family get-together. Thank you, Mary.
Back in Port Colborne, both as young, married women but separated by time, Mary and I shared a common neighbour, Cathy Porter. Cathy lived on the corner of Oak St. and Omer Ave. for many years. When I had first moved to Omer Ave. Cathy came over to greet me. After finding out that I was Mary†™s (and Pearl†™s) niece…well, I was immediately accepted as a friend, and Cathy watched over me. Love those family ties! Thank you, Mary.
When your mom worked for the nursing home in St. Catharines, we would save craft things for future projects (now they call it recycling!)…egg cartons, old cards, etc. She always liked getting fresh-old craft-stuff.
Back when our kids were little, we had some nice summer get-togethers in St. Davids. Thank you, Mary.
Your mom made a regular conversational appearance in our visits with Randy†™s mom, Beryl Smith, from our first meeting in 1998 to her passing year, 2005. Beryl had short-term memory loss but could still remember back to her younger and middle years, when she and her husband Pete (George) would regularly play cards on Saturday nights with other couples. One of those other couples was the Harris†™…your grandparents. Their favourite card game was poker. Beryl would tell us she was quite good at the game, that they†™d bet pennies, chortling about playing poker with the sheriff. This was a good and familiar memory for Beryl…with the short-term memory came the feeling of being stupid, she was afraid of losing her mind, afraid of going crazy. So, the best we could do was getting Beryl to laugh and reminding her of good times. After we talked about poker-playing, we†™d have a regular continuation:
…the Harris†™s had a son, Tim. Tim married my Aunt Mary †" wow, she liked that connection/ then it would get really exciting †" Tim and Mary had SIX kids †" Beryl got the biggest kick out of that and marveled at just the thought of that many kids in ONE family…always wondering how your mom did it! I†™d tell her your names and try my best to count the grandchildren. You see, your family brought Beryl many collective hours of joy over the years: It was always a brand-new story for her, bringing cheer to her imprisoned mind. Thank you, Mary.
We had our together-times over the years, good times, sad times. Sometimes years would pass when our paths didn†™t cross… in 2009 before we left for BC, I had a chance to visit Aunt Mary twice at family parties. Good times!
I most certainly miss hugging each and every one of you in person. Since love knows no distance, I send you all spiritual hugs and prayers. As I wrap up this letter, the first visitation is just beginning. My wish for you is peace and joy in your hearts.
Love Paula
