Obituary of Otto Bergman
BERGMAN, Otto
Passed away on Friday, December 25th, 2020 at the age of 99. Beloved husband of the late Hertha (nee Bogusat) for 70 years. Father to Linda Healey, Brian, Marilyn (Gerry) Cornwell. Grandpa to Robin (Michelle Sampson) Healey and Great-Grandpa to Dash. Otto was the first son of 10 children born to the late Frank and Margaretha Bergman. His family was part of the German Mennonite Exodus, escaping death in Russia to come to Canada to make a new life. Many of his friends throughout his life were part of this community.
Otto was a longstanding and dedicated member of Christ Lutheran Church, where he held numerous roles and was a dedicated bible study leader.
He loved mechanical engineering, and became an automotive engineer. He spent many productive years at Thompson Products Limited (TRW) where he had a broad community of colleagues and friends.
Otto was an active and talented athlete. He played hockey well into his forties. He and Hertha had a very active social life. In addition, he had many interests and hobbies – radio electronics, gardening, photography, fishing, boating at the cottage up north, and woodworking. He was an energetic and active person.
Otto was very happy to spend his last years at the United Mennonite Home, where he would relate fond memories of the farm on Mapleview Avenue where they lived in his early youth. So much has changed, he would say, as we drove along Highway 8.
Arrangements are entrusted to the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines. Due to Covid-19, a private family burial will take place and a Celebration of Life will be announced later. Memorial donations can be made to the United Mennonite Home.
