Obituary of Stanislaw Nowakowski
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Stanislaw Nowakowski at his home. Stanley will now be rejoining the love of his life Julia (2013) who he missed dearly since her passing, and his son Joseph (2009). He will be greatly missed by his children Ella, Theresa (Larry), Julia, Andrew (Carol) and (Dianne). Cherished Dziadzia of Gregory (Nadia) and Great Dziadzia of Gillian and Nathan aka Mason, as well as many family members in Poland. Stanley was born in Wasosz, Poland on April 10th 1925.
Stanley was a Prisoner of War and survived terrible atrocities in both Auschwitz and Mauthausen concentration camps for 2 ½ years. After the American liberation he was in a displaced persons camp In Weiden, where he met the love of his life, Julia Majka. He arrived in Canada in 1949, establishing a home in Kirkland Lake and a career at Lake Shore Mines. His wife Julia joined him with their two children several months later.
Many of Stan’s friends whom he met at Lake Shore Mines were Polish immigrants, that all settled in Kirkland Lake and then later moved here to St. Catharines, to pursue a career with General Motors of Canada. Stan was lucky enough to enjoy a long retirement, retiring in 1989.
He was a long-standing member of the OLPH church and the Royal Canadian Polish Legion.
His family will always cherish the memories and adventures we enjoyed as a family. Including several driving trips including destinations to Ottawa, Montreal, Florida, and PEI. We enjoyed many day trips, picnics, smelt fishing, and most recently Bald Eagle watching along the Niagara River every spring.
Stanley was a true gentleman, generous, kind, with a sharp wit, and always willing to lend a helping hand, which his entire family, friends and neighbors will miss dearly. He loved gardening and would share his bounty with those around him. Stanley set an example for us all in the way he lived his life, his quiet strength and reserve will remain an inspiration to us all.
The family would like to thank all the nurses from 2-A at the Niagara Health System who looked after Dad over the last month, especially Rebecca, with whom Stanley had a special fondness for.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate a donation be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Family and friends are welcome at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME 585 Carlton Street St. Catharines on Monday March 8, 2021 from 2:00PM to 4:00PM and from 6:00PM to 8:00PM. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church 5 Oblate Street St. Catharines on Tuesday, March 9 2021 at 10:30AM folllowed by interment at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. As per the Province of Ontario Covid-19 regulations - visitation is limited to 30% building capacity and funeral attendance is limited to 50 guests. All guests attending the visitation and funeral must bring a mask and must call to make an appointment. (905)-937-4444.
