Obituary of Peter Michael Kotyk
June 5, 1959 - March 30, 2021
It is with such saddened hearts that we share the loss of a beautiful soul, our father, our brother, our uncle, our friend, Peter Michael Kotyk. Peter passed away unexpectedly this week of a stroke at the young age of 61. This great sadness is shared by his son Michael and spouse Amber, sisters Cathy, Rachel Delaney and brother-in-law Brian, Lucy Carpenter and brother-in-law Dennis Van Brussel, and brothers Gregory and Paul. He was the cherished uncle of Laura (Tim) and Rachel (Steve) Carpenter, Corey, Kyle and Lauren Kotyk and beloved friend of Carrie Richards. Peter was the adored first son of Michael and Laura Kotyk and dear brother in-law of Sandra Kotyk who all predeceased him.
Everyone who knew Pete loved him. They say he never had a mean bone in his body or spoke ill of anyone - a rare trait by any standard. In the early 80's he was a formidable squash and racquetball competitor who left many shaking their heads as to what just happened to them. He loved fishing with his son, his Dad and brothers. Pete enjoyed just about anything that had to do with being outdoors. Being indoors never suited him. After dedicating 25 years working at Domtar Papermill, Peter pursued many interests, but like his father before him, his heart was always in farming and gardening. His gardening plans began in early January each year with caring for his many seedlings. It culminated with the boundless growth that even he could not control. Peter kept his family in an inexhaustible supply of home-grown vegetables, grown with love and shared in the way that only those who knew Pete would understand. He worked with community gardens, helping others to learn planting and was never too busy to lend a helping hand to others - be it gardening, moving, or just about any odd job he was asked to help with.
Just recently Peter added 12 beautiful chickens to his backyard pen. His "girls" provided dozens of special organic eggs to family and neighbours every week. This was his joy and his life mantra - providing for others. Many people say that Pete was their "favourite". Indeed, he was special, one of a kind. This unique life was taken far too soon - he had so much more to give. Rest in peace "sweet Pete".
The family sends our love and thanks to the brave and compassionate staff of NHS St. Catharines Intensive Care Unit, including all the nursing team and Doctors who cared for Peter in his final days and helped his family through this most difficult time.
Final arrangements have been entrusted to George Darte Funeral Home. For now, a private family gathering will commemorate Peter's life, but a proper tribute and celebration to respect Peter's life will be held at a future date. To honour Pete, you can plant a vegetable garden or even try a single plant this year and when you taste those fabulous home-grown veggies, you can thank Peter for the inspiration and share the love with all those around you. You can also plant a tree to remember this beautiful person, whose love of nature knew no bounds.
