Obituary of Mario Costante Corte
CORTE, Mario Costante
January 23, 1941 – May 13, 2021
Passed away peacefully at Linhaven with his loving wife at his side, due to complications related to dementia.
Beloved husband of 51 years to Geraldine (Jean). Dear father of Sandra (Jamie Ryan) and Rob (Cathy). Proud Nonno of Mackenzie, Noah, Zack and Jacob. He was loved by his siblings Peter, the late Pervinca, Ivanes, Lina (Remo) and their families. Mario was a wonderful man who lived his life with integrity. He will be missed by the multitude of friends he made over the years.
Born in San Fior Italy, Mario was a decorated cyclist and local sporting hero. In 1962, he emigrated, quickly adopting Canada as his new home. While learning a new language and culture, he began his 30 year career as a welder at General Motors. Displaying a tremendous work ethic, often working 7 day weeks, he proudly retired in 2000. A prominent and dedicated member of Club Roma for over 50 years, Mario served in various roles including President, Board Member, Secretary, Dance Chairman, and was a key leader in the Club Roma Soccer Association.
Mario’s love of soccer led him to coaching at the minor level. Under his disciplined guidance, the Optimist Wolves won numerous championships and tournaments in the 80’s and made an appearance in the prestigious Robbie Tournament final. The highlight of his coaching career came in 1983 when the team became the first in St. Catharines history to win the Ontario Cup. Mario enjoyed socializing and having fun. Whether playing cards, throwing the perfect bocce ball or crushing rivals in tomato stomping contests, he loved to be around people, and loved to compete. He was known for his immaculate garden and immense tool collection. If you needed a vegetable or a wrench, he had it.
To Mario, nothing was more important than his family. Family always came first. He leaves behind a legacy of pride, respect, accomplishment and love.
You will be forever missed. We love you!
A special acknowledgement of gratitude to Linhaven and the staff at Henley, Regatta and Lincoln Houses. The support and kindness shown to both Mario and Jean throughout his 4 year stay cannot be overstated. You were incredible!
A private family funeral service will be held on Monday. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton Street, St. Catharines, ON. If so desired, please donate in memory of Mario to the Alzheimer Society.
