I was just looking through some old books in my library and noticed the first 2 volumes of a classic work signed by Douglas Campbell. Fern introduced me to his dad when were in high school at Merritton. I remember Fern as a warm and caring person who was also a great athlete. We lost touch after high school. But he remains in my conciousness and always will.

Vivid Memory of Fern in Track and Field
It is with enormous sadness that I heard of Fern's passing today, New Year's Day of 2011. To Kim and Alexis, I can only imagine the hole in your heart that must heal and my deepest sympathies are expressed to both of you and all of Fern's friends and family members. Aside from being a good friend in high school, Fern provided a moment in track and field that I have recounted to my own sons on numerous occasions, one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences that seemed surreal at the time and continues to be so in recollection. We must have been in grade 12 or 13 when we participated in a mixed relay event at Winston Churchill High School. Fern and I were in a team where the first two runners had to go 100 yards (in the good old days of imperial measurements), Fern ran 200 yards and I had to finish with a 400 yard run. I remember standing on the track watching the first two guys go and exchange the baton and we were certainly in the mix with everyone else. Suddenly, as Fern took the baton, he broke into a long, smooth stride that runs through my mind some 40 years later like it was in slow motion. Quite frankly, he just left the other runners in his wake and by the time he passed the baton to me, the lead was so great I could have moon-walked it and we'd have won. At the end of the race he was, as ever, just a humble member of the team but I remember saying to him then that I would never forget watching him round the top corner of the track. It was the most beautiful display of pure athleticism I have ever seen. I am sure many others have such vivid memories of Fern in other endeavours and thus he will live on forever with us.

from a Merritton sports friend
I remember Fern from Merritton High where we did track and football together. Later we would run into each other at the ball parks since our daughters played rep fastball as well. He was a very competitive fun loving person with a great smile and a very kind heart. Our deepest sympathies to the family. I am sure you have been blessed with being a part of his life.

Kim, Alexis, Betty and Sharon;
We are so sad for all of you in losing such a beautiful man. He always was so kind. It has been said that 'You can judge a family man by how he treats his mother, and Fern was the kindest and most helpful.' David and he never did get in that golf game that they planned so David is waiting to play him in heaven.

I am in such shock and speachless to find that my Uncle has passed away...I didn't even know he was sick
Uncle Fern has always been there for me in some of the most heartbreaking, difficult and challenging times of my life, I could always count on him to br there without asking twice he always reassured me about decisions and always got a truthful answer from him, he was always funny,truthful,and extremely handsome. He was a strong man with tons of compassion, and a great love for his whole family...he even offered to get testing done to see if he could donate a kidney to my late father Albert. I will miss him more then words can express. His passing is a total shock, and a great loss to our family, I will always have a great respect for Uncle Fern for never turning his back on me, hearing me and understanding everything that I have gone through in my life... Uncle Fern was a man that every man in this world wished they could be! ...I am so sad to hear this horrible news. I Love you Aunt Kim, Alexsis and Grandma
