Our sincere condolences to John’s family. The tributes left by many of John’s students attest to his amazing gift as a teacher. We know him from launch and haul out times at DYC, although I don’t recall John getting into much yacht racing at DYC, probably too slow for a race car driver. May God’s peace comfort the family.

We have known John for over 3 decades. First as a neighbour then as someone who quickly became our friend.
For us there are many, many memories, too numerous to recount. To us he was a generous man with great wit and humour...someone with a love for adventure and someone you could count on when needed...asking nothing in return.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
RIP John.

I’m so sorry to hear of Mr. Reep’s passing. He was my law teacher at Laura Secord back in the late 90s, when I wasn’t particularly interested in school. He had a lot of patience with me, and was a large part of the reason I ended up graduating. He truly cared about his students. My sincere condolences to all who loved him.

Our condolences to Tori, Jonathan and family on John's passing. John was a great man who I really don't think realized the impact that he had on so many lives. I enjoyed his company as we spent many days skiing and cycling . His inquisitive mind could leave no stone unturned, There was no such thing as "I wonder what is down that road" it was "let's see what is down that road". His love of life was apparent as was his quest for the perfect carved turn while skiing. John liked to drive. He could spend hours behind the wheel and rarely would surrender the drivers seat. Keep on motoring. Tim and Sue Whittle

With a heavy heart I read the news of Mr. Reep’s passing this morning, and I offer my condolences to Tori and family.
I think he taught me at least five courses at Laura Secord, and I have so many great memories of those history and law classes. He was one of those exceedingly rare teachers who thrive on trying to inspire students to think for themselves—that was his best lesson.
I was also lucky to know him a bit outside of school through my friendship with Tori. I remember once, when he took us to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, how we rocketed down Hamilton Mountain afterward. Truly one of the best drivers I’ve ever had the privilege to ride with! I like to think he’s out there, still racing everywhere at the speed of light.

I first met John back in the early 70s, during his racing days. We spent many so many weekends camped at racetracks in torrential downpours, stifling heat and even occasional snow, but the friendship went beyond racing. John will be missed by everyone whose life he has touched. Our thoughts are with you all, enjoy all of your memories.

I was saddened to hear that one of my all-time favourite teachers has passed. He taught me history and law in the 80’s at Laura Secord.
Where do I begin with the stories? I don’t recall him specifically saying the earth was flat, but he insisted it wasn’t round.
He challenged his students to bring in any photo allegedly taken from the moon and he would prove it was faked.
Hockey was for losers and auto racing was where it was at.
Day 1 of the school year in the senior grades he asked if we were all happy with our chosen seats. When we said yes, he then separated us based on our shenanigans from the previous year.
He would leave the class to check on a neighbouring one that was making a lot of noise and come back singing, “If I could walk with the animals, talk with the animals…”
A friend left the class to get the cafeteria warm chocolate chip cookies for us to enjoy during an educational movie. Despite his best efforts, my friend was unable to hide the crinkling sound from under his jacket as he returned to his desk. Probably best I don’t say how, but Mr. Reep ensured the contraband cookies got squashed.
I feel like a few of us had a mutual understanding with Mr. Reep in a mischievous/challenging way where we knew that with any other teacher, we’d be sent down to the office for our behaviour and with any other students, Mr. Reep may have some of his own explaining to do.
I am thankful to have run into him a few times as an adult to thank him for his fun classes and show him that I turned out ok because of or in spite of him.
He was one of a kind!
My condolences to his family.

My best memory of Mr Reep isn't from his classroom, although his classes were always interesting, and the experience shaped how I taught my own kids to drive. It was a Chevy Cavalier, not a Porsche, but Mr Reep was still able to successfully teach me to parallel park. More notably, he also taught me how to merge onto the QEW (on the old short Niagara St on ramp) at the speed of traffic - NOT the speed limit. Thanks for the lifelong lesson!

My condolences to the family. I shared many experiences with John both inside and outside our shared time at Laura Secord Secondary School. We shared a love of cars and of skiing. He was a great help in running Secord's ski club. His recitation of the flat earth theory amused some of his students, but left some distraught that the possibility that the earth was a flat disc and not the orb that God created. His sense of humour and his consummate story telling ability made him the best of company whether during a spare period or a long trip. Some his tales were too fantastical to be believed, then a supporting fact would appear. Always entertaining.
He once came out to my place with John junior and took a car I built for a ride. When he returned he commented that the small scale of the car made 80km feel like a hundred miles and hour. I then pointed out to him that the speedo was in MPH and that he wasn't far off the the 100 mph.
I think he would consent to me using some of his material. I will keep his spirit alive by retelling the part of his story that he shared with me.
