(My Eulogy for my Pal)
Hello Friends,
Friends of Harrison, friends of his beloved Laura, Preston & Henley
and , of course, their respective families
– loved ones - all - in this room , I am sure.
We are all here with heavy hearts, naturally,
Given the loss of a very bright light in our collective lives.
The brightest of lights.
When asked to speak here today,
to bring focus onto Harrison’s adult life,
I wondered what I could say,
that hadn’t previously been shared,
in the most exquisite detail,
by the man himself? Harrison.
You ALL know what I mean.
My personal journey with Harry began,
like several of those mourning here today, and elsewhere…
It began on the curling sheet.
It was the late nineties I suppose,
and I was maybe in my mid thirties,
and there was this young , EAGER , high-school curler..
You know him, right? Does EAGER quite capture it?
SUPER EAGER ?? UTTERLY EAGER ??? RIDICULOUSLY EAGER ????
And I suppose I thought to myself….
WHAT THE WHAT ?? ( or something like that )
and DOES HE HAVE TO BE SO LOUD ??
I simply didn’t know at the time what I know today.
Turns out that , Yes, yes in fact he did.
Fast forward a few years,
Harrison was, of course through school, a brilliant guy,
and still curling,
and still being “all things Harrison”
There was always something that we, his curling got to hear all about.
ALL ABOUT.
Whether it was him assisting a soccer team,
or his travails in different jobs,
-Edgewaters Restaurant, driving for Dannel School bus,
-“Living the Dream” working as a Motor Coach Operator for AYR Coach,
-selling consumables and paper products for Kaumeyer Paper,
or his latest gig, teaching kids in what he called his MADD “RV”, we were his audience and got to hear every experience in the finest of detail.
And details seemed to be what Harrison was about.
He had an efficiency at getting things done, but not without making sure that EVERY detail was checked off.
And he knew details about each of us.
“Bud”, I saw your car was at Bugsy’s last night. Big Date ?? “
“Bud, a little slow getting that snow shovelled yesterday? “
Sound familiar?
But he kept us entertained, did he not?
Harrison was always willing to help.
And everything that he did had a consummate level of excellence that you would have thought impossible
by someone with so much raw energy.
You’ll all agree that Harrison shared his emotions too.
Wore his heart on his sleeve,
whether it was at a time of loss in his young life,
or as he looked for love, experiencing a few heartbreaks along the way until he found his perfect mate.
You could tell when he was happy….
And you could SURE TELL when he wasn’t !
I remember his excitement at “the big reveal”, introducing us to his beautiful Laura.
We were all worried for her at first to be a little honest.
I mean, she seemed so relaxed around him.
How was this possible?
But we came to see that Harrison had met “the one”.
… the perfect complement
… the one that would ground him with love.
And that love was, and is, incredible.
I know now that, like many
through curling, I was so lucky to be just somewhat on his path,
and even luckier that, during his journey,
he would choose me as a friend, a confidante, and to stand with him at his wedding to Laura.
Yeah, I’ve sometimes wondered… Why me?
Truth be told, I’m about a full generation older than Harrison.
Regardless of the reasoning,
he took to me, and I took to him
and saw him somewhat as the younger brother I never had.
He was always there when I needed him.
I felt lucky again when Harrison recently called me to his hospital room to keep him company, ……. when maybe….. he needed me.
In Harrison-like fashion, he ordered extras from the hospital menu such that he could stash the leftovers to share with Laura.
He offered me some. “Terry, have some, it’s FREE !”
Occasionally he would check in on his home by way of security cameras. Didn’t want to miss a thing.
Needed to know everything that was happening this season in the curling leagues.
In those hours, he showed me his strength in the face of his illness,
and he remained determined that he would regain his health, and be able to rejoin his wife and children at home.
And to enjoy curling once again.
These were his goals.
I’m so proud of the valiant effort he made.
So, as a result of my observing, and hanging out with Harrison for so long,
in great times, and challenging ones….
and particularly in reflection of his passing….
I think I maybe now understand that part of THE ABSOLUTE MAGIC that he had was this:
EACH and EVERY person whom he held close in his heart,
were IMPORTANT to him…
and he was never afraid to show it. It came naturally to him.
We all saw it, all experienced it. Harrison’s MAGIC.
If you were his friend, you felt that you had been CHOSEN.
If you were family, well, you were quite simply, GOLDEN.
If you were neither, well he had a special way with those folks too.
Harrison knew how to fully appreciate the moments of his life
Great moments with the people that he loved,
family and friends alike.
That’s the guy I’ll remember,
And that is surely his lesson to each of us.
And that’s the Harrison Hull we will miss.
Love Ya Bud !

Laura, Preston, Henley, friends and family,
I met Harrison through Jets Soccer and through Holy Cross high school soccer. There's no one else we would imagine driving us to scholarship tournaments and SOSSA and OFSSA. Harrison would even come to some of our Jets practices and games just to cheer us on and lighten up the bench. Just seeing Harrison would put a smile on everyone's face and I know personally I couldn't help but start laughing without even saying anything. And in no time at all, Harry became my friend.
Lucky for me, because Harrison was the bus driver, he had power over what movies we played. We played one movie, and that movie was "Dumb & Dumber". We knew all the lines and would scream them during the bus ride, during the game we travelled to play and then on the ride home (some people just weren't cut out for life on the road). We would greet each other saying, "Hey Hallihoopa" every time we saw each other, and it never got old. He would empress on everyone at bus stops that, "According to the map, we've only gone 4 inches!". Haha I can't imagine those trips without Harry.
There are no memories of Harrison that I have where we weren't teary eyed with laughter. He was such a special, positive force. His ease of conversation and energy was something I always admired and tried to match, even when having bad days. I loved how Harrison could find the positive in any situation - even if it was something small and insignificant (to others).
Harry came by my house a few times (I have no idea how he got my address) and hungout with my Mom and I for a few hours while we washed my Moms car. I told my Mom that this was just Harry - he had a big heart.
In college, Harrison even made two trips to see myself and a few other Jets players play all the way down in Pittsburgh. It meant the world to us that he came down, but truly no one would expect him to do anything different because he was such a caring person that would do things like this for the people in his life. He cheered us along and called us when we made it through playoffs and joined the live stream. We were all so touched and excited that we had his and our other Jets coach's support.
It's been a handful of years since I have seen Harry in person because I don't live in the Niagara area, but we would keep in touch over text. I wish nothing more than I would have made some time to meet up with him and Laura and his kids. There's no doubt in my mind that Harry was the best Dad. I would love to be a fly on the wall seeing Harry interact with his kids - it would be so fun, entertaining and wholesome.
My heart absolutely breaks for you all and for everyone because Harrison was so damn unique and special; and his time here was too short. He was one-of-a-kind pure and simple and impacted every person he met (I wasn't there for every instance, but I know that it is true). Although he can never be replaced, his memory can live on for as long as his friends and family keep him alive.
My most sincere condolences. #ihategoodbyes

Laura, Preston, Henley and family,
I met Harrison a few years ago when he was my skip during a bonspiel at the St. Catharines Golf and Country Club. His popularity, energy and enthusiasm were obvious. He spoke with such love for his wife and was thrilled to be a dad. Nothing was more important to him than his family. He shared lots of pictures and stories that weekend. During one end, he was yelling at us to SWEEP HARDER and his voice carried all through the rink (even writing it in capitals does not do justice to how loud he was :)). He was so loud that the skip on the next sheet of ice said, 'ladies, you do not have to put up with that'-meant and received in a totally joking way. He was such a character and so much fun to be around. My heart goes out to all of you. The world has lost a truly bright spark.

I have no words to express my utter shock and heartbreak over hearing about Harrison. Harrison was by far the most optimistic man who modelled what it meant to not compromise. He taught me that life was to short to do or be exactly what you want. It doesn’t make sense that someone so full of life could leave the Earth so early.
I truly hope the entire family can find some sort of peace in the coming months.
Hope you have your curling broom and shoes with you. Here’s to another 8-ender in Heaven, buddy. Thanks for the laughs and memories! Hugs to you all.

Phyllis, Mac, Laura & Families,
We are shattered to hear of Harrison’s passing.
We have many wonderful memories with our families, he was an extension to our family. We spent many happy times around the dinner table (loved my spaghetti sauce), playing board games (he thought we were wild), in Punta Cana for our family wedding. We will forever be grateful and blessed to have had Harrison enrich our lives. He was truly ‘one of a kind’.
Laura, our deepest condolences to you, Preston & Henley. Over the next few days, you will hear from many as to how Harrison has touched their lives. Keep all your memories close and we hope in time they will give you comfort. We are deeply sorry for your loss and will keep you all in our prayers.
Phyllis, there are no words to ease your pain. You need to stay strong for his beautiful family. We still remember when Christina had her tonsils out in grade 3, the doorbell rings and little Harrison is standing there with a floral arrangement for her. You standing in the background, had picked him up on your lunch hour and stated that you were teaching your boys at a young age as to how to be thoughtful to girls.
Mac, remember all of those great times with Harrison and how he enriched your life. You have many stories to tell down the road with Preston, Henley and your children. Sending our condolences and love!

I don’t have specific memories as Harrison was a couple years younger than me and not in my friendship circles however I do remember him marching through the halls of HC with a quick walk and ALWAYS a zest for life. Like he was always on a great mission.
We also got stuck being rink rats watching our brothers play hockey. He was still in the little brother stage so he was a little quieter then ;) I know he got to really bloom in high school and I’m pretty sure anything he did, he did well. He was more than well liked by both classmates and teachers.
I know without a doubt he’s made a mark on soooooo many and I can only believe that he packed his life with experiences and memories in a shorter time that some don’t get to experience in a full lifetime.
He will be a constant reminder to me that life really can be short and to truly live life to the fullest.
Keeping you, Mrs.Hull, and Mac/family in my prayers.

May songs of the angels welcome you and guide you along your way.
