Obituary of John Melvin Mewhinney

MEWHINNEY, John Melvin “Boppy”
November 2, 1933 – March 2, 2023

After a short illness, John passed away peacefully in his 90th year. He leaves behind the love of his life and wife of almost 60 years, Erna Mewhinney (Werner). He was an incredible and dearly loved father to Coleen & Brett Flynn, Sharon & Ron Berg, Derek & Cindy Mewhinney, and Debbie & Dave Meade. John was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Winnifred Mewhinney, sister Sylvia Newell and brother Ron Mewhinney.

Boppy will forever remain in the hearts of his 13 grandchildren, Kylie (Brendan), Emily (Josh), Kathleen (Nathan), Bridget (Matt), Kurtis (Catherine), Matthew, Mitchell, Ethan, Abby, Claira, Madeline (James), Nicole and Sam and 7 great grandchildren, Isabelle, Bowen, Brett, Aidan, Naomi, Sophia and Luca. 

John was born in Toronto and proudly joined the RCAF at 18, spending time overseas and on the Dew Line. He went on to a successful career with the St. Lawrence Seaway and retired in 1998. John was a selfless and tireless volunteer who gave so generously of his time in the judo, soccer and ringette communities to name only a few. He was a member and Past President of the Grantham Lion’s Club and enthusiastically sang with the St. Catharines Singing Saints.

He was the heart of every family get together and will be very missed.

John’s family will receive guests at a visitation on Friday March 10, 2023 from 2 - 4 pm and 7 - 9 pm at GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines.  A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday March 11, at 11 am at Christ Lutheran Church, 140 Russell Avenue, St. Catharines. Friends are invited to join family in a celebration of John’s life immediately following the service at Coppola’s, 203 Carlton St, St. Catharines.  If desired, donations to Jump Start or the Lion’s Foundation of Canada Dog Guides would be appreciated by John’s family.
