Obituary of Nicolaas Johannes Holierhoek
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our beloved father and Opa, Nicolaas (Nick Holierhoek).
He was predeceased and now reunited with his wife of 66 years Gerarda, parents (Hubert and Adrianna), brother Hank (Joan), sisters Wilhelmina (Peter), Adrianna, and grandson Bryce.
Loving father to Michael (Bunny), Maureen (Scott) and Marsha (Jerry) and his beloved dog Robbie. Admired OPA to Connor (Hillary), Braedon (Vanessa), Dawson (Hawklene), Julia (Dave), Callei (Andrew). Super Opa to Drew (Mazie), Bryce, Miya and Annie, and Super Duper Opa to Jace. Respected brother to Clazina (Bill), John (Leny), Hubert, Simon (Agnes), Coby (Matt), Ann (Jim), Corny (Linda), and Adrian (Jane). Brother in law to Helen and Ben (Sharon).
Nick was a gentle soul and the epitome of a good man who has had an impact on the lives of everyone he touched. He was an avid nature lover whose relationship with the outdoors was infectious and has been passed down three generations. His corny jokes would make your eyes roll but you couldn’t help but smile. Nick came to Canada from the Netherlands with his parents and siblings in 1953. He loved his life in Canada and never looked back. He worked for Wrights Bakery, Canada Bread and retired as a bus driver for St. Catharines Transit in 1997. Most important to Nick was his family to whom he dedicated his life. Everyone else came first. No better example of this was the care he provided for his wife who was bedridden with pulmonary fibrosis. His personal sacrifice went beyond being a loving husband. He was her caregiver and allowed her to pass on with dignity in her home of 65 years. Nick always found a way to see the bright side of things. If you ever asked him how he was, you would always hear TERRIFIC!
Visitation for Nick will be held at George Darte Funeral Home, 585 Carlton St, St Catharines (905)-937-4444 www.dartefuneralhome.com on Sunday April 23rd from 2-4 & 6-8pm. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Monday April 24th at 11am.
In lieu of flowers you would honour Nick by planting a tree.
