I am remiss at not getting this note of heartfelt condolences on my part to you sooner. Please accept my expression of thoughts and prayers for the late Peggy Niven, who I encountered many times over throughout my priestly life. In particular, our paths met while I was stationed in St. Catharines and there I came to know her as a devoted parishioner and dedicated teacher. I retain a special place in my heart for her, and offer my gratitude to Almighty God for the gift of having known this marvellous woman. I send along my greetings to each and every member of her family at this difficult time of loss. Peace be with you, (Fr.) Peter T. Rowe (St. Vincent de Paul Church, NL)

I will always remember my Aunt Peggy, as a caring, loving, thoughtful presence, that bestowed her love to those around her. I spent a fair bit of my childhood at her house, moreso than any other of the Gordon side of my family. Swimming in the pool, visiting at Christmas, being scared of her tiny dogs, and always enjoying exploring the sun room, the bar area, or the lower basement. Even after decades, of being far removed from those frequent visits of childhood, I was blessed to be kept in her thoughts. To receive the odd message of parental encouragement, or to remember a past milestone, or to wish a happy birthday to my own children. I was always touched by the little outreach of love, and sad that life got so busy, and work got so in the way, and my own family time was so encompassing, that those old time visits just faded into memories. Those feelings of love stay with us forever and brighten the dark times, when we need it most. I'll fondly recall all of those memories, as I do the ones from Nannie and Grampie's house and their magical backyard.
Aunt Peggy always reminded me so much of my Nannie. And Melanie reminds me of Peggy, as does Chasnie of Melanie. The true power of love and family, passed between generations is astounding. Melanie's words are always perfect, as we've all seen through this journey. I sure hope that in similar situations, I can emulate such an inspirational cousin, with strength, and grace and love. I'm sure Aunt Peggy must have been so proud of Melanie, and cherished all of the time and love they shared.
My heartfelt condolences go out to Uncle Grant, and my cousins Melanie, Matt and Bobby, as well as their families. Also to Aunt Colleen, Aunt Sally, Aunt Marian, Uncle Wallace, all of the cousins that shared Peggy as an Aunt, and my own parents Rhoney and Joyce, who I know will miss her dearly.

I am so deeply sorry to hear about your beautiful Mom.
Our family lived on Dunkeld around the corner from the Gordon’s. Peggy use to babysit Gail Donnie and myself, she was always so soft spoken and so very kind. Later years I babysat for her when she lived on Scott St. She will always be remembered with love and I’m sure the love she had for her children and grandchildren will live in your hearts forever

How do you summarize someone’s life in just a few moments or words? Sometimes you just can’t, especially for someone so special as Peggy. She was all about family and being the best mother she could be to Melanie, Bobby and Matthew and Bonnie and grandma extraordinaire to all the grandkids. Peggy always spoke proudly of her kids and made it her priority to always be in-tune with their lives and she was always their focus and priority. Her children loved and adored her and they were by her side until the very end. There’s no greater gift and legacy.
Peggy was like a mother to so many beyond her family over the years, to her students and all the friends Mel, Bobby and Matt brought home. From making the perfect “crunchy” peanut butter and jam sandwiches, never ending snacks, and genuine interest in the goings-on of others, everyone always felt welcome around Peggy. She was affectionately known as my Mom# 2 and had an important place in the hearts of my family. I don’t think we can ever say the word “cottage” and not think of Peggy.
Peggy was an exceptionally smart and educated woman, not many of her generation had a bachelors degree let alone a Masters degree, yet she was just as grounded and graceful. Peggy made working, education, raising a family look easy, she made being a grandmother and enjoying retirement look simple and natural. And then all too soon she faced enduring illness, recovery, surgeries, pain and her last days with unmatched faith, bravery and love.
Peggy’s life is also a love story, she and Grant adored each other and were rarely apart. As grumpy and gruff as Grant can be, he was completely vulnerable to the power of her devotion. It was love at first sight when they met years ago and from that moment he gave up his vices and supported her everyday through the good times, the wonder years, through her illness, her recovery and through the last days and weeks. Peggy loved Grant and her family every day of her life and at the end wanted to make sure the family and Grant would stay lovingly together after she was no longer there. Mama Bear’s Wishes!
We may not be able to summarize Peggy in a few moments but, we could sure learn a few things from her on how to carry out our lives. A life of love, family, calm and grace. We can all benefit from adding a little more to our lives.
We will miss you Mom# 2, we love you and will always remember you. Our sincere condolences to Dad# 2, Mel, Bobby, Matt and their families at this sad time.
Love,
Greg, Gabi, Genna and Geoffrey Molnar

Dear Grant, Melanie, Bobby, Matt and family,
We are sending you our most heartfelt condolences for the loss of Peggy. We will always remember Peggy as the kind and beautiful woman that was always smiling, offering kind words and a helping hand at any of the kids birthday parties, summer pool parties or get togethers. We often think back to our trip up to the cottage and have such fond memories. One memory specifically that always brings us joy and makes us laugh, is when we were sitting around the campfire at the cottage telling spooky stories and Peggy came out wearing what appeared to be a beekeeper suit to make all of the kids scream and eventually when they realized they were not in any actual danger, laugh. We hope that you may find comfort knowing that your Mom is at peace and we are grateful to have known such a wonderful woman.
Love always Robin, Danielle, Dylan, Krystian, Michael and Leo

It has been an absolute pleasure to take this journey with sweet Peggy for the last three years. There are no words that I can say to help you during this extremely difficult time. She is such a wonderful soul and will be greatly missed by everyone who was lucky enough to know her. She may not know this but she has helped me learn and grow, not only as a nurse but also a human being. I will forever be grateful to Peggy for allowing me to be a part of her journey as well as all of you for allowing me to stay close with her during all of the transitions. Peggy is easily one of the most beautiful, kind, generous, loving, strong, courageous and caring women I have had the pleasure of knowing and I know that this strength and kindness will be passed down for generations to come. Love you Peggy!

As one of Peggy’s former colleagues, it was my privilege to watch Peggy daily model the same values, virtues, and lessons that Jesus Himself taught us. Heaven is undoubtedly a better place with Peggy in it, and I pray that God comfort her family and friends, until we too are also called home ourselves. Calvin Jessome, St. James

Peggy and I were neighbours many years ago. I always remember her as being such a quiet soft spoken person who was an incredible Mom, teacher and friend. She would do anything to help anyone. Unfortunately we both moved and I lost touch with her for many years. I am a Volunteer at the Hospice and I was heart broken to see she was admitted recently. I was so thankful I had a chance to speak to her and also to see Grant, Melanie, Matt and Bob. It brought back a lot of good memories. I want to pass on my deepest condolences to everyone. I know she will be missed dearly. I hope your many memories will help keep her by your side forever. I will be away so unable to attend her Service but I will have you in my heart during this difficult time.xoxo

My sincere condolences to the entire Niven/Gordon family on the passing of my Aunt Peg. Lots of great memories of fun times and sleepovers at 25 Dunblane throughout my childhood. Peggy was just 6 when I was born, so she and Sally and Marian were more like my cousins than aunts. I moved away for almost 30 years but every trip back to St. Kitts included visits to Peggy's and Grant's house where I was always welcomed with lots of love. Peggy had a mischievous side to her and one time when Susan and I came to visit and were told everyone was downstairs in the family room, she hid in the bathroom until Susan went in to use it and Peggy jumped out and scared (quite literally) the crap out of Susan. It is memories that keep those who have moved on alive with us. My Aunt Peg will live on not just with her family but with all those who knew her, especially her students. God's embrace.
