Obituary of John Wherry
AKA “Punchy”
December 16, 1935 – June 25, 2023
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved John, age 87, on Sunday, June 25, 2023 at Pioneer Elder Care, Vine St. He is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Sheryl; children Margo, Mark and Michele; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Gavin Levesque (Doreen) and sister-in-law, Jan Mathers (Bill) in New Zealand as well as several nieces and nephews.
John retired in 1991 after spending 38 years with General Motors primarily in the Metallurgical Laboratory. He spent a lifetime pursuing many sports, most notably handball and cycling. John will always be remembered for his quick wit and his gentlemanly mannerisms. He was loved by many who cared for him over the past several years as his health declined. Special thanks are extended to several caregivers from Rose Hill Lane, of special note Anna and Geverine (Joy) and a very sincere thanks and appreciation to the entire staff, Doctors, nurses, PSWs (especially: Lorilyn, Larenda, Sheila, Veronica and April) at Pioneer Elder Care. Their exceptional care during the past few weeks has been absolutely amazing.
In keeping with John’s wishes, funeral arrangements have been entrusted with the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines. Cremation has taken place and visitation for John will be held on Friday, June 30th from 1:00-3:00 PM at the George Darte Funeral Home followed by a reception at The Dalhousie Yacht Club, 74 Lighthouse Rd., St. Catharines from 3:00-5:00 PM. As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, please consider making donations in honour of John and his family to Hospice Niagara and/or the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
