Obituary of Giovanna Antonia Arghittu
Giovanna Cocco-Arghittu, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 26th 2023 surrounded by her loving family at St. Catharines Hospital. Giovanna was born November 20th, 1934 to Michele and Francesca (Nieddu) Cocco in Nughedu, San Nicolo, Sassari, Sardegna, Italy. She was the fourth of five children.
Giovanna, immigrated to Canada in May 1960 where she married her late husband Emilio Arghittu in September 1960. Giovanna first worked on their farm in Niagara-on-the-Lake then to various companies in the Niagara Region. Giovanna was a founding member of Club Sardegna Nel Niagara and member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Giovanna enjoyed baking the traditional Sardinian foods, while watching her Italian Soap Operas and Reality TV. She treasured her time spent with family and friends.
Giovanna is survived by her daughter Josie (Raffi ) Atmekjian and son John (Charlene Juras). She leaves behind the loves and treasures of her life her two grandchildren Simone (Aaron),Quinn, Jason (Stephanie) D’Annunzio and her three great grandchildren Iyla, Aubrey and Jaxon whom she was so very proud of. She is also survived by in-laws, Jane Cocco, Adriana Iddau, Peter Arghittu (Maria) and Vincenza Arghittu. Also, many nieces and nephews in Canada and in Sardegna. Giovanna was preceded in death by her parents, older sister Angelina (Francesco) Secchi, older brother Gesuino Cocco, older sister Mariuccia (Antonio) Arghittu and younger brother Salvatore Cocco.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Dr.J A. Paolone, Dr Brooke Tang, Dr Soliman, Dr Al-Dabbagh, and the exceptional 3B Team at St Catharines Hospital. Also, special thanks to the PSW's from Parmed and Bayshore who cared for Giovanna at home the last five years.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 1st from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at George Darte Funeral Home, 585 Carlton St., St. Catharines, with Vigil Prayers at 3pm. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, October 2nd at 11 am at St. Alfred’s Church with burial at Victoria Lawn Cemetery to follow. As per Giovanna’s request, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Canadian Liver Foundation and The Kidney Foundation of Canada.
