1925 – 2023
Together at last, together to last. William Dennis McLean of Port Dalhousie, St Catharines passed away peacefully on October 18, 2023 at 97 years of age. Beloved husband of 70 years to Joan (predeceased in July 2022).
He is survived by his children, Susan (Tim) of Calgary, Christopher (Elaine) of Mount Pleasant, Karen (Chris) of Mississauga. Cherished grandfather of Robert, Jennifer, Rachel, and Peter.
Precious great grandfather of William, Ava, Alexander and Charlotte.
He is also survived by his siblings, Patricia of Hamilton, Douglas (Ruth) of St Catharines, Bernard (Carla) of Chicago and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brother Glenn of Keene.
Bill served with the Canadian Armed Forces in World War II with the Queens Own Rifles. He was wounded in France but recovered and participated as a guard in the Nuremberg trials. Upon return to Canada, he was employed in the wine industry and made his way up the corporate ladder with Barnes Wines, Ltd. and later came out of retirement to work with London Wines. Bill participated in the Champagne trial in the 1970’s as an expert witness. He contributed all his knowledge and expertise into the growth of the Canadian wine industry as we know it today.
Bill excelled at sports including swimming, sailing, golfing, and skating and continued walking, drumming and ball room dancing into his 90’s. He also enjoyed cottaging in northern Ontario and was an avid fisherman.
A Funeral Mass will be held by Father Richard at Star of the Sea church in Port Dalhousie at 11am, Saturday October 28th, 2023.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer expressions of sympathy in the form of donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
